eye troubles? entropion?

I have two babies. A boy named Simba who is 17 months, and a bitch named Nala who is almost three years. Nala is extremely hyper and fairly small(70 pounds). She is a total sweetheart though and just longs for affection and attention. Simba is very much laid back and despite being decent size(85 lbs), is really a big teddy bear. Well, about 6 or 7 months ago, Simba started scratching at his eyes and wimpering. So, we took him in and they said he had an infection and gave us some ointment. We used it and it seemed to work, but the problem returned. This time they suggested a surgery where the eyelids have a small wedge cut out of them and then are stitched back together, thus pulling the eyelid open more.(the reasoning being that the eyelid was too far rolled in and the lashes were scratching the cornea and causing the problems.)He always looks sleepy anyways, so this would explain it. Well, it seemed to work, but I think his eyes still bug him a little bit, though not near as much. Our Vaccination clinic said they may have undercorrected and it still might be rubbing. This of course makes me a little upset being that I put my baby through this surgery and subsequent recovery period with a lampshade on his head as well as shelled out 500 bucks, and they may not have fixed it well enough. Any suggestions or comments about this topic?
Please post, I am anxious to hear opinions and experiences along these lines.
Thanx.

If the surgery undercorrected the problem a simple exam should be able to tell for sure. It's also possible that your dog has underlying allergies that just made the initial problem worse. Allergies could cause the problems you're seeing now. It's not uncommon for dogs to have allergies.

Unfortunately entropion, ectropion and allergies are not uncommon in Rotts. Not as common as in Bloodhounds or Bassets, where the breed standards call for the haw of the lower eyelid to show.

Hi Willstud..

Tigger had the same problem with one of his eyes - the lower lid curled in and the lashes irritated his eye. He had surgery to correct it when he was about 10 months old and I haven't had any problems since. The vet did an excellent job - you can't even tell he had surgery.

When the surgery was performed I was told that it might not "take" and he may have to go back for an "adjustment" after it healed but that the vet clinic would re-do the surgery if necessary for no additional cost if I had it done within the first year after surgery. The vet said that some times it was hard to tell if he took eough skin out until after it healed and he didn't want to take too much out to begin with cause you can't put it back http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif I would check with the clinic that performed the surgery and see what their policy is since they didn't fix the problem completely the first time.

I'm not sure if you were planning on using your male for stud but this condition is hereditary and is considered undesirable in breeding dogs..

Thanks Lanna.

No, we had him neutered about two months ago as we didn't feel we could deal with the time it would take to properly care for and socialize the litter. Thanks for the info and I will check the vet.

You could ask your vet if he'd do this at no extra cost, maybe except for the drugs he must use like anesthetics.

Have it done if it seems necessary. Be the judge.
