Talking Sadie

Sadie was at the vets back in June and I asked my vet about this and he said it was the heat but I still feel worried about it, Sadie is only eating app. 2 or 3 cups of food a day, this started early June. She weighed 111lbs. in June. She use to eat 5 to 6 cups a day. Should I be worried??

Re: Sadie

I only feed Gypsy 2-3 cups a day and she is a puppy, Chopper eats about 3 cups per day and he is 2.5

Re: Sadie

Ok thanks. Sounds like I am worring about nothing. It was just such a change so it made me worry.

Re: Sadie

Missy only eats 3 cups a day max, split over 2 feedings. How has her weight changed since June? Not being able to see the dog, I can't say for sure, but 111 sounds like more than enough for a bitch. Missy is around 91.

Re: Sadie

She looks like she lost some of her pot belly, she was over weight. She doesn't look underweight to me.
I have been trying to figure out where and how to post their pics.

Re: Sadie

I saw her pics and I think you're fine feeding her less. Samson weighs about 100 lbs and I don't think Gretchen weighs more than 80. Samson eats 1-2 cups a day and Gretchen's getting 2-3. I switched them to Canidae about 6-8 weeks ago.

Re: Sadie

I just looked at Sadie's pictures. It looks like she could still need to lose 5 - 10 lbs. She is pretty heavy. It would be a lot more healthy for her. I would keep her at her 2 - 3 cups of food a day with NO extra treats. If you or the family feed her treats, then cut back on her food accordingly.

She should probably weigh around 90 lbs. The 111 that she weighed in June is WAY too much for her structure!

Dozer looks good.

Re: Sadie

Yeah back in June the vet said she needed to lose about 20lbs., I think she has lost some but I can see she still needs to lose more. Some one (sorry I can't remember who) sent me a great link on how to tell if she was over weight.
Thank you all for your help, I feel better now and will stop worrying about it.

Re: Sadie

Tucker gets 3 1/2 - 4 cups of dry a day, tho he'd eat much more if it was there :-) , and he's around 90# right now, and really long legged.

Re: Sadie

Samson (10.5 yo) gets 2 cups dry food and 2 cups barf diet daily (he has cancer). Moses (5 yo) gets 2 cups dry food and 2 cups barf diet daily (he needs to gain weight as he is underweight). Deja (6 mo) gets 3 1/2 cups dry food daily. She also gets barf diet treats.

Re: Sadie

I have never had a bitch who needed to eat more than 2-2.5 cups per day. Good for you, taking the weight off her, she will be much healthier at a lower weight. Looking at the picture, if she has an average size frame for a bitch, she needs to lose about 30 lbs. It can be done, I took 30 lbs off a rescue bitch over about 6 months with lots of long leash walks and feeding 2 cups per day of a quality food (Canidae, in her case). She went from an out-of-shape 106 lbs to a lean, muscular 76 lbs.

Re: Sadie

I have never heard of Canidae. She eats Dads dog food, we have tried others but she doesn't eat it. She has gone 3 days not eating when we try to change her food. Trying to remember what we've tried. Don't mind my spelling as I am not good at it. Kibbles and bits, science diet, Alpo, Ol' Roy, Iams. I can't remeber the others.
What does the bag of Canidae look like??

Re: Sadie

If she doesn't like Canidae, you can also try some of the other premium foods. Check the forum as there have been multiple topics on this (sorry, I don't know how to post a link yet...not quite computer literate in that arena ). I buy my Innova at a local feed supply store...try this vs a chain pet store. It also took a period of several weeks to switch my dogs, but some do it instantly. Good luck!

Re: Sadie

MissMary,

Canidae is a much better food then the ones you have mentioned trying. It is a "Super Premium" food and you have to feed much less to get a much healthier dog. It will make smaller stools, soft shiney coat, no smell of dog and increase energy. It can't be purchased at a normal store, not even a petsmart. Usually only feedstores, small private pet stores, or online. This is a link to the company.

All Natural, Human Grade, Holistic Pet Foods. Dog Food, Cat Food, Kitten Food, Dog Biscuits, & Canidae Platinum Diet

It costs more per bag (about 40 dollars, 50 with shipping handeling if ordered online) but you will feed less. I priced it against ol' Roy for a friend with a great dane, and she would feed 6 cups ol' Roy vs. 2-3 cups canidae. She would only save $5.00 per MONTH feeding ol' roy (the worst food ever).
