| anesthesia bad ? Is anesthesia bad for my pup? Winston has Cherry Eye in both eyes and he went in for surgery yesterday and had them corrected. In one of his eyes the gland has prolapsed again and he must go back to the vet and get it tacked back in place again today. For this he must be sedated, and for his follow-up removal of the stitches he must be sedated again in approximately 10 days. Winston is 4 mo. is being anesthetized this much harmful to him in anyway? Thanks for your thoughts. |

| Re: anesthesia bad ? Unless he has a major heart defect, or severely comprimised liver/kidney, he should be fine. Today's anesthetics and sedatives are very safe.

| Re: anesthesia bad ? My old boy (10+) just had to have some serious surgery, but prior to that, he was sedated twice within a period of 3 days (and all this less than a week before his surgery). I worry far more about older dogs than puppies......he sailed right through it without a blink. Now, I will say that my vet is very cutting edge with meds and protocols for pain mgmt, sedation and anesthesia. I have no idea what your vet is like and I'd probably do some asking were I to go somewhere new.....what drugs to they use, etc.

| Re: anesthesia bad ? When I had my girl spayed, I made sure to ask what type of gas would be used, before I commited to the operation. Some older types of gasses, such as Halothane are sometimes used. Not good for MY dog. Newer gases, such as Enflurane, or Isoflurane are less toxic, in my opinion. |

| Re: anesthesia bad ? My vet tends use combos of propofol and isoflurane, depending on the situation. Propofol does NOT cross placental barriers, and therefore is used while puppies are being delivered in a c-section, then the bitch is switched to the iso. I also believe they generally use the propofol for induction and then switch over.
