So I found a tick on Denver..

So I found a tick on Denver..And I know all this stuff was recently discussed in chat...but I can't access that history.
it was engorged...I don't think it was a deer tick...I saved it in a jar...head and all.
So my question is seeing as Denver has a appointment monday for regular heartworm check and all.
Do I or Should i ask for any extra tests to be done incase he got something from the tick...or will this be too early(5 days from when I found it).

I don't mean to worry, but I do

as a side note...for all those who ask why we don't usually discuss Rottweiler stuff in chat...this is why....I could have searched what Gretchen had said if it were in a forum....I should have written it down

Re: So I found a tick on Denver..

The HW check will have Lyme and ehrlichea on it as part of the snap test.

If you later want a full tick panel, you need to wait 6 weeks, then have it drawn. In my opinion, the ONLY one worth doing around here (Northeast) is the Cornell one (bloods sent to Cornell in NY). If your vet can't/won't specifically do Cornell, find another one to do it. Cornell gives you actual dilution numbers.

Re: So I found a tick on Denver..

I pull ticks off of my dog pretty regularly in the summertime. We hike in the woods a lot.

I usually check him before we get in the truck to go home, and then again when we get home. I sometimes have to pull them off of me.

Pulled two off Serena and Two off my daughter yesterday, and I have been tick paranoid since. As an after thought since I already got rid of the ticks, should I have kept them? If so, why?

Re: So I found a tick on Denver..

Some people keep them for identification purposes. If you pull a deer tick off a person, and are SURE it's a deer tick (and live in a Lyme endemic area), the protocol is to start doxy within 72hrs, otherwise, you just sit and wait for rashes to appear (says she who is now on doxy for lyme.... )

Yup, I was on doxy last year. I saved the tick(s) and brought them to my doctor.

Lyme disease does not always produce a rash. If in several days you have a fever, flu-like symtoms, pain in your joints, it is best to see your doctor.

Yes, that's why the protocol is to start the doxy within 72hrs, if possible. My initial labs showed not titre, so no previous exposure. Hopefully the repeat set comes back clear too. It's all the same issues as in dogs.

Re: So I found a tick on Denver..

How long does it take for them to get engorged? I am getting Preventic Collars for Gunner today, But I have already pulled 4 off him. None of them could have possibly been on him for more than 10 hours. I do a pretty regular body check on him frequently, we grew up with ticks, YUCK!

The first one was 3-or so weeks ago, how do Lyme symptoms present in a Dog?

Re: So I found a tick on Denver..

Banja's never really presented. My vet STILL can not get over how "sick" she was, except she didn't show it. The ONLY way we noticed anything at all was during a chiro exam. She said "she seems a bit sore." Something told me to run a full tick panel at that point, even though the vet did not feel that was necessary at the time. I'm glad we did!
