Sensitive Stomach? IBS ?

Hey guys, I have a question, and before I start I have already consulted a veterinarian, although I don't agree with her, which is why im here.....
Inu has begun to have a bout of diarrhea; this would make it the maybe 3rd time in about 2-3 months. I don't know what is triggering it.
I took him into the vet, and she says that it is irritable bowel syndome and that I should put him on Metronidazole for 4 days, and switch his food; She wants me on science diet sensitive stomach; Me knowing very well that Science Diet is garbage, I decline it, and ask for an alternative. She doesn't want a diet with rice in it. I pick up blue buffalo fish & sweet potatoe; read the label, and see that it has rice in it. then I am sufing the internet and find that 'healthwise' has a lamb and oatmeal formula. Any ratings on healthwise? AND any thoughts on royal canin potatoe & venecin?

Secondly, I don't think it's his food (Innova LB puppy). I think it is some treat/bone triggering it. They only get the bones labeled natural out of the store, and maybe some purina chewy treats. I know he is much more sensitive to a degree, he just recently had an allergic rx to some perfume the daycare sprayed on him. meanwhile kikyo has a stomach and body of steel.
Has Anyone else has this problem with chronic diarrhea?
I want to just do trials and see exactly what it is triggering it, but I don't have enough flagyl, nor may the doc have enough patience for me to do all of that.....perhaps I should just follow instructions, maybe get a second opinion?

Re: Sensitive Stomach? IBS ?

Sounds like a process of elimination. If you don't think it is the food, you could cut out ALL treats for awhile and see if it helps. Reward with praise and single peices of his normal food. If this doesn't help, keep off the treats, replace them with something you know he does okay with (carrots, apples, banana) as treats, and try out the "no rice" suggestion.

Arwen doesn't eat anything from a "grocery" store. No purina, not even treats. She gets fruits and veggies as treats and snacks, some natural human grade treats from online (there are also much better quality things at petsmart), and is on Canidae dog food. I just can't bring myself to give her thoes nasty greasy puperonies or anything else weird by the makers of low grade dog food/products.

Re: Sensitive Stomach? IBS ?

Hey Tex, I use the kibble as treats for the "occasional" good behavior. I too avoid the grocery store bought puppy junk food. On a side note Tex, I see I am not the only one with the habit of nameing thier dogs after Japanese Animation characters. LOL!

Re: Sensitive Stomach? IBS ?

I think CH has some good advice...my brother a was having food allergy issues as a baby and they basically had to restrict what he ate and slowly add new things every other week. I think the same plan would apply to dogs...

keep him on the normal food with no treats and see how it goes...if you still have the problem, try another food. A friend of mine here has a similar issue with her dog...it turned out that her stomach just couldn't handle the lamb formula she was on but the chicken was fine...if you go for single protein source food (I believe california natural is...) this process of elimination can happen a lot quicker!
