My Dog has bone cancer

Max-A-Million was diagnosed with bone cancer just yesterday. This is one sad family. My simple question is does anyone have experience with alternative medicines and/or procedures. Natural cures? Or is this just impossible at this time. We will not be able to cut off the dogs leg. I'm hopeful for some magic bullet....

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

I'm sorry to hear about your beloved Max-A-Million with bone cancer. If you do a search of the various threads here on RDN, some people have some pretty good info on holisitc treatments and different ways of handling bone cancer. I lost my Buster and Bettis in '04 to different types of OS. One thing I can suggest is ask questions and gather as much info as you can, so when you talk to the Vet, you can make the best decision possible for your trusted friend. Here's a site that gives you info on OS.

We'll be thinking good thoughts for your Max and your family.

Another helpful group I used when my dog was diagnosed with cancer http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CanineCancer/

Please read the sticky on the top of this forum called Ethical issue:Cancer treatment options

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

I have posted extensively on OS regarding holistic treatments. In my opinion you need to find a balance between natural and conventional medicine but most paramount is pain relief. Your dog IS in some type of pain. Rimadyl is worthless for bone pain, look into the new pain meds for dogs or ask your vet to give you a scrip for PIROXICAM and a scrip for cytotec (helps protect the tummy). Do a search on my name "chivas' or PM me and Ill send you info.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

I am so sorry to hear about Max-a-Million. The Big C has run rampant in household over the past few years as I lost Tuxedo to bone cancer 12/3/01 and Sasha to lymphoma 02/03/06. One of the groups that helped me a lot is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cancerinrottweilers/. Everyone on the site has unfortunately lost a rottie to some form of cancer. My heart breaks for you as this is a most difficult decision. God bless you as you travel this rough road.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

I am so sorry that you and Max have to go through this. When my 9 year old was diagnosed with bone cancer, we did treat her with Rimadyl. I would have to agree with chivas, I don't believe that it really gave her much pain relief. Knowing what I know today, I would have gone about the situation in a different way. You and Max are in my thoughts.

So very sorry to hear about Max. My good friend just lost her 2 yo lab to OS. did the conventional surgery and chemo, but he died 2 weeks after chemo was done (the cancer had spread to his lungs). I wish you all the best, and hope you are able to get some great quality time with him

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

I am so sorry to hear about your Max. OS is truly a horrible disease. I lost my Sofie last November to it... she was 8 years old.

For the pain, the vet gave me a scrip for Tramadol. It did help tremendously. Unfortunately, she ruptured her c/l on her right leg, (the os was in her front left) and could no longer go on.

My prayers are with you two.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

We just lost a Rott to bone Cancer. He had a mass on his lung, all blood tests were fine and poop he had to be put down a week later. As he was passing he had the symptoms of CHF. He lost a lot of weight. He was getting lame and you could see the discomfort in his eyes.

My heart goes out to you.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

FYI - a dog that has bone cancer shows elevated levels of alkaline phophate in its blood.

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

Change Max's diet asap. Carbs are said to feed cancer cells in animals. My rottie had cancer and I was able to slow the progression by changing her diet or at least she was alive about 5 times longer than the vet gave her in the beginning. Salmon, liver, hamburg, sardines in water, spinach, cottage cheese, eggs, Lots of garlic, ginger, turmeric. I used to cook the meat and put it freezer bags so that it did not have to be done daily. you can sprinkle ginger and turmeric right onto the food and don't be sparing with either. There is a canned food that you can order from the vet for rotties with cancer but it is very expensive, $50, per case, used it when in a hurry. If the leg can be removed you may have a change of stopping it, but my girls was in her shoulder, and too far along. Regular dog food is loaded with carbs so stay away from it. Lots of love and faith!!!

Re: My Dog has bone cancer

Diet is extremely important in the growth of cancer cells. I had a rottie, who passed from cancer, I was able to slow the growth of the cancer and had I known what I know now I would have had her on a special diet years prior. Carbs feed cancer cells in animals, most dog food is loaded with carbs. I put her on a diet consisting of salmon, sardines, hamburg, liver, spinach, brocolli, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt non-dairy. Ginger, turmeric, and garlic daily on the food. Cook the meat and put it in freezer bags so that you don't have to do it daily. She was prescribed a pain medication, and I had her on chromium picolinate for arthritis. She maintained her personality, seemed very happy throughout, and her coat glowed. She exceded the Vet's prediction by 5 times, so I'm convinced the diet helped. She had bone cancer which can be very aggressive. Treasure every moment!

Re: My Dog has bone cancer-Update

Max has taken a turn for the worse. Yesterday he fell and now his right rear leg, the one with cancer, he can put no downward pressure on it. We had a "float coat" from our boating days and this allows me to help hold his back side up. We go outside but he cannot go, he seems too nervous. He's on rescue remedy and K9 immunity and transfer factor from alohamedicinals.com. We'll see what tomorrow brings...Thx for all your kind thoughts...

I lost my first Rottie, my AngelBunny Spot Dog, to osteo.

I am so sorry you and your boy are walking the same sad, heartbreaking path I walked with my boy.
