Thumbs up Moka's time is almost near

Well most of you know that Moka came from BYB back in 2003. I knew nothing about Rottweilers and what to look for like OFA's, Tryroid, Heart, Eyes, etc.......I responded to an add in my local paper stating rottweiler pups for sale with championship bloodlines. I made the call and by the weekend I was driving to Barron, WI to see them. I should have knew something was wrong when they had about 50 adult rottweilers and 4 different litters on the ground. I chose the 7 week old pups as they have 7,8,10,and 14week old pups to pick from. I choose Moka and paid the lady $500.00 for her and I got a receipt and off I went to do the 4 hour drive home.

Once Moka was home I noticed she was pooping worms and made an appointment to the vet. The vet tested her and she was filled with worms. They gave her a dewormer and recheck in a couple weeks. Well this lasted about close to 2 months before she was completely worm free. At about 4 months old I had her spayed. WRONG IDEA!!! As I found out later that she has spay incontinence. At 6months old Moka was whining and limping so had had x-rays done to find out she had HD. Was put on medication for that. At 1 year old we re-xrayed her and found that she went from mild HD to severe HD and she was taken to Illinois where she was a candidate for a TPO in her right leg but would need a Total Hip Replacement in her left leg. We went through the TPO and opted out of the other because of $$$$. At 1 year and 2 months she was rushed to the ER to find out she had Focal Facial Seizure. Since then she has not had a seizure since. Now November 2005 she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Mind you in between the beginning to now we fought with food issues as she could not hold down any dry food and had to be switched to Raw. All in all this experience has costed me well over $15,000.00 for a $500.00 dog.

Now I am thinking this is almost the end for her. She just turned 3 on 5/26/06 and she seems to be getting worse. Last week she has decided not to eat(which she is very food motivated) and her walks have decreased to only around the block. She has trouble getting up and I now have to physically get her up. She is screaming and whining when she moves from side to side. I know the end is near and we see the vet on Saturday. The vet says to try adiquin (sp?) injections but you know this girl has been through so much in such a short life that is it really worth it? I can see she is tired of trying to fight and boy she gave a good fight. The reason I know the time is near is because I took some pictures this past weekday for her B-day and all her pics have her ears pulled back and she wouldn't stick her tongue out. That's not her trust me I know. She loves to have pics taken.

I am sorry this is such a long and drawn out post but I wanted everyone to get the idea of what has went on in my life with a BYB dog. I am not saying it wasn't worth it cause Moka gave me the best years ever and her temperment was to die for. She graduated puppy, basic, CGC, and became a TDI dog all in 2 years. I wouldn't trade an experience like this for the world. She has shown me so much in such a short time that I will be forever grateful.

So if everyone could keep Moka in your prayers as I will find out what will happen on Saturday it will mean the world to me and to Moka.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Wow, that IS a lot to deal with. I'm sorry that you may be losing your Moka, it doesn't seem fair.

But, thank you for posting this, it just MIGHT show someone contemplating the purchase of a dog, the importance of good breeding.

Will be thinking of you guys.

Thank you Stubby!!! That was my intension was to make people aware of the BYB and I sure hope no one else has to go through with what I went through cause it truly breaks your heart to watch this.

Moka is a 3 year old dog trapped in a 10 year old dogs life. It is very sad to watch.

I am so sorry - it was kind of you to take the time to spell it all out so that others can learn from this - it must have been difficult

Re: Moka's time is almost near

Wow, I'm so sorry you are going through all of this.

I, too, had a Rott from a byb. I lost her last November at 8 years old to osteosarcoma. She also had elbow dysplasia, and blew out both knees. Her temperment was also to die for.

I still miss her terribly, but I can tell you that each day will get a little easier.

You'll know when it's time. It's very obvious that you have her well being at heart.

You two are both in my prayers.

Re: Moka's time is almost near

My heart breaks for you as you make this most difficult decision. Moka needs you to give her the same unconditional love she has given you. And I'm sure the last 3 years hold wonderful memories. It is truly sad that so many only consider them "dogs" and this mentality is truly what causes the BYB issues. I will keep you and Moka in my daily thoughts and prayers. God bless you.

Re: Moka's time is almost near

I'm sorry, too, to hear of Moka's plight, and your pain of having to watch your girl go through this.
I know that we should never, ever buy from a BYB, and this is a perfect example as to why, but you know, you are giving Moka the best life that she could have; your constant vigil over her and the love that you are giving her are more than most of her litter mates are probably getting. Moka had to go SOMEWHERE, and she ended up with you. What a good thing for her!
I wish it were so that all of us could band together, buy out all the puppy mills, then shut them down, but the cold hard fact is that is never going to happen.
Good luck with Moka, keep her well-loved, and know that even if you did purchase her from a BYB, she knows what it means to live and to be loved.

Re: Moka's time is almost near

Thank you everyone for the kind words. As I try to type the tears keep rolling down my face. I am sorry if some words my be spelled wrong cause it is very hard to see through my pain and tears. I want to educate the people who think that buying a dog for so cheap may not cost you in the end is wrong!!!

Money is not everything to me as the well being of my beloved dog Moka. I took a 2nd mortgage and maxed out my credit card for her and if I had to do it all over again I would. But money isn't going to repair the damage done to her anymore. She is tired of fighting and I can see that. I refuse to keep her here on earth for my own selfish needs. It isn't fair. I now she will be whole again and wait for me when my time has come and we can start over where we left off.

I just wish it didn't have to happen so soon in life for her.

She doesn't know that - dogs don't have that conception of time - she only knows she has been loved and cared for every minute of her life - she isn't anticipating tomorrow - she is only in the here and now.

Not that it makes it easier for YOU - just wanted to remind you of that.

Re: Moka's time is almost near

Regardless of how much time she has had or has left I, for one, am very glad that she has spent it with you. You have learned a great deal since you came here and it has helped both of you immensely. I am only sorry that what you learned could not overcome the problems created by the lack of knowledge by Moka's "breeder". Thank you for being the best companion your girl could have had.

Re: Moka's time is almost near

My heart breaks for you darlin'. I know what you are going through as I went through the same thing with my Princess, well almost the same thing. She came from a BYB as well, but I was just 17 when I bought her. I knew nothing about the testing that SHOULD have gone on. But she won my heart over instantly. I say that had I known then, what I know now I wouldn't have gotten her, but to say that I think I would be lying. Had I known all that she was going to endure in her life, I am glad she ended up with a family like mine who tried their best to make her life a good one. With her seizures and near liver failure because of the pheno barb, I know she would NOT have gotten the quality of life from anyone else then she did from our family. They would have given up on her. She may have been given up and who knows what home she would have gone into. But on May 1st she lost her battle to Osteosarcoma. A loss that I had to make happen.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Know we are here for you. And thank you for telling your story, I know it was hard to do, but it had to be done in hopes of educating others. Thank you. (((((HUGS)))))

Re: Moka's time is almost near

I'm sorry your time with her is being cut far too short. She's had a tough haul but has been ever so fortunate to have had you there for her. You have done so much to give her the best life possible. My thoughts are with you both.
