Black Flie Bites

I was hoping someone could advise me on what to use to repel black flies from my dogs. I am "Up North" and they are thick right now.I would hope to find something natural. They are eating the boys up. Thanks Sarah

Re: Black Flie Bites

nothing works great that's not toxic

However Eqyss Summer defense spray works semi well (and works very well for ticks and mosquitos) and White Mountain insect repellent works fairly well also (for the White Mountain, I mix the small oily bottle with a spray bottle's worth of warm water. Shake well each time you use it)

Both are pretty strong in smell and the dogs are not very fond of it

Re: Black Flie Bites

It seems that they are attracted to the color black.

Re: Black Flie Bites

another minnesotan!!!! We used to be in princeton mn but we have now moved back to the cities...my vet told me to take deepwoods off and put it on my hands and rub it on his head...watch out for eyes ect....i only did that acouple of times the flies used to bite him so bad his face would swell up then we had to do the benadryl ect....i washed him everytime we came back in i did not like the idea but after so many bites we had to try something as the frontline was not helping with the flies....i dont have to do it anymore

Re: Black Flie Bites

I use Buzz Off which is an oil, around the face along with Skin So Soft on the body. But when the going gets tough, I do resort to chemical sprays to give the dogs relief during the heaviest part of black fly season.
