Re: Heat Stroke

No vet available at this hour, even if I could afford to go to one. He developed symptoms after the vet in this tiny mountain community closed and he won't be open for several hours.

I'll try to get some GatorAde now. Are there any other home treatments I can try? I've been giving him cold water and hosed him off.

Thanks.

Re: Heat Stroke

In case he won't drink the gatorade, you can mix pedialyte with chicken broth and get "lytes" in him this way. My dogs won't drink the pedialyte plain.

I also have a question, can a heat stroke result in causing mild siezures in a dog later? Are they also more prone to heat stroke later?

I have a very large mixed breed rescue. He occasionally (maybe once or twice a year)has a mild siezure. The vet has checked him out and can find nothing, which is not unusual. He gets wobbly in his front legs and lies down. Also has a "far away" look in his eyes. The interesting thing is that I've only seen this happen in hot weather. No, I don't exercise him in the heat. If we walk in the summer, it's very early morning or late evening and our house and yard are both shaded.

Re: Heat Stroke

Thanks. He didn't like the Gatorade. He didn't like the Pedialyte plain, so I'll try the chicken broth. Would 50/50 be about right? I also have the frozen Pedialyte pops, which I hope he'll think is a treat.

I've tricked him into taking meds before by telling him that it's a treat, making him do a trick and giving it to him as if it's something he should love. It not only works 98% of the time, but he remains convinced that it was good because he practically inhales it.

Re: Heat Stroke

He's about 6. That's a best guess because he was a rescue when I got him on Dec 12, 2001 and they estimated him at 1 1/2 then.

Normally, we are only apart when I have to be in the hospital for heart problems. If you see one, you will see the other within a few feet. We don't like to be separated.

Re: Heat Stroke

Keeping pedialyte pops sounds like a good idea. Many dogs will eat ice cubes. I would try 50/50 with the pedialyte and chicken broth. At the very least, you're getting fluids into him. This is what I do when one of my guys has diarrhea and has to be on clear liquids for 24 hours.

Please let us know how he does.

Re: Heat Stroke

He seems to be improving quite a bit. Some friends took up a collection and I'm going to get him to a vet in the morning, but he's perked up considerably.

His appetite is back and his movements are much better, though still very slow. He's following me around and wanting to go places with me again. His spirits are good and he's being very affectionate and alert. He's drinking more water and laying around in front of the fan.

He hasn't been able to play yet, but he shows an interest in the idea of it when I mention his toys, or ask if he wants to play. These are all good signs and I hope to see a full recovery.

Re: Heat Stroke

I would still recommend getting him to a Vet to get this checked out, just in case it's something else. Best of luck to you both.

Re: Heat Stroke

It is 99 - 104 here this week during the day, and worse it is in the 80 degree range for the nights. When it does not get in the 70's at least it warms up fast in the mornings. I limit our guys to outside only for business, they have shade and cool place to rest and the rest of the time they are inside. It seems to be much harder on them this year, they are 8 & 9 yoa now. We have stopped 5:00AM walks until it cools a little and the humidity goes down, and that will not be for at least 6 or 7 weeks here.

Re: Heat Stroke

I had a rott that got heat stroke horriable thing !!! The first thing I did was give him water which he promptly threw up . So I started to give him little bowls of water at a time he would have turned mad at me to get the water so I kept a door between us . Normally a sweet dog but a rescue so I didn't know his background.I just kept giving him small bowls of water and he calmed down and made it but it was like he got rabid. very scarry. I couldn't have hosed him if I wanted to .

Re: Heat Stroke

I know about cooling off the boys' testicles, are there any spots like this in the girls?

We are headed out to a Sieger this weekend and the forecast is for 33 degrees Celcius, which is about 90 F and I am very worried about heat exhaustion. The males are on in the morning, but the females aren't in until between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

This post is exactly what I was looking for, but I am wondering about any specific spots on the girls that need extra attention.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Heat Stroke

Also, I asked this question earlier...........Is a dog even more prone to heat stroke if he's had one previously? Thanks.

Well, my trainers always tell me to wet down Emmy's "privates" also and her underarms. So when we take breaks during class in hot weather that is where she gets sprayed. If she won't drink I also squirt her in the mouth to get her to swallow a few mouthfuls. Hope this is helpful!

If you can hose the whole underside, that is best. If you just have a spray bottle, go for the "pits", The arm pits and between the rear legs.
