Saved a PUP need some Info

Hello Everyone!

Im new to this forum and I love dogs. Its exciting to see a website thats dedicated to great information. Its absolutely invaluable.

I just went to the Pound in NM (most disgusting place I have ever been) and couldnt helpmyself from saving these 3 Rott pups that were being put down the next day. This place was seriously a deathcamp, a holocaust for dogs, and it infuriates me. My town in Colorado loves dogs so its wierd to go 50 miles in a direction and be in a Dogs version of 1940's Nazi Germany. The people at the shelter were jerks to me and obviously couldnt have cared less about the dogs. There was probably 25 dogs there that are now dead. I apologize I had to vent.

The point of this is that I kept one and found homes for the others...
Anyways, I love pups and just wanted to see if I could get some general health/behavior information.

First,

Is it ok to buy the first shot and give it to her myself? It contains the first two doses of something, I think Parvo and something else. I dont want her to wait until the visit. Do you think if I keep her inside she will be ok for a couple of days? Are viruses rampant everywhere or mainly in pet stores, streets and dog parks?

She has a decent, marble sized, hernia. I just want to make sure that it will be ok to wait until she gets spayed to get it fixed.

Next,

Is it ok that she has her tail still? She also has a very black face(nose) not like the pictures I have seen, is it still a possibility that its a purebred? I have seen Rotts from Germany that look similiar. She is only 15 - 20 lbs. Its not important for it to be purebred but I would like to know what type of dog characteristics Im going to be dealing with if its not all Rott.

Last,

Just curious where I can find some more in depth behavior training information on the net. I have bought a bunch of books which are good begginers guides. Im assuming that all dogs are trained the same except for intelligence and intensity factors.

Thanks for any help you can give!

I havent named her yet, any suggestions?

Re: Saved a PUP need some Info

Welcome...and thank you for saving those puppies!!!

I can't answer all your questions...am sure more experienced owners will help...but if you read thru the puppy development threads....and do a search on any issues to narrow down the subject....this forum will probably provide you with more answers to your questions than any publication ever will.

Having a nonregistered rottweiler with a tail will not prevent you from engaging in many breed activities....herding, agility, obedience come to mind. The docking of tails has become an issue in various countries...in some it is prohibited, but as you dog is not registered, the venues that require docked tails would not allow your pup to be shown. If you do searches here on various aspects of training...you will find out tons of information that has worked for some of our problematic puppies!!!! lol

Some rotts seem to miss the tan eyebrow markings...looking almost black from the front on. A member qualified in confirmation showing could indicate whether this is a DQ fault or not...I am not sure. But you may never knowthe exact parentage of your dog....but ALL dogs require the training; socialization; good food and love. Rotts are "people dogs"...they prefer always to be with their owners and most of us keep our dogs inside....for that reason and also for safety factors for the dogs themselves.

Post some pics if you get a chance....please keep reading and reading and reading here....you will find out more than you ever could have imagined from a ton of superbly qualified members. Welcome!!!!

Re: Saved a PUP need some Info

Bless you, Durango.
A puppy eh? Well buckle up.
Yes, keep her inside and buy her a crate to crate train with. Search the forums and you will find tons of info on crate training.

Best to get her to a vet, like tomorrow, just for a look see, vaccinations, and to get the hernia looked at.

Books are good, this discussion board is the best, and start looking for good trainers that have worked with and like Rotties. All puppy training should be fun and positive.

Get some chewy toys. She is going to start chewing, most likely you, so redirect her from your flesh to a chew toy.

The real experts here will chime in soon with alot more info than I can provide. I have 2 pups now and they are a dream, but they can be momentary nightmares as well :)

Have fun, love her to pieces, and read, read, read.

First thing I would do is take the pup to the vet!

And yes … the tail is OK and it’s definitely to late to dock.

No... dogs should not be trained the same way. They are all individual, which means, you have to take the dog's temperament into consideration… however positive motivation and lot of fun works great

Bless you for rescuing these puppies and giving them a chance at life.

I would take your pup to the vet without delay. The vet will advise you about the hernia.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tail. Tail docking is now illegal in Australia so we are getting quite used to seeing Rottweilers with tails.

Please crate train your little puppy and keep us updated with her progress.

Re: Saved a PUP need some Info

I truly admire you for what you did for those pups. They would be dead right not if not for you. As far as giving your own shots, do you know how? Some are given in the neck area some in the butt. I have no idea which is which. If you have no experience, you will need to practice and not on the dog. If the dog lurches the needle can break in the dog.
Some pure rotties have blacker faces than others. This is normal. To late to tail dock.I think they look beautiful with their tails. Go to the vet.
Best of luck with your new addition.

Please take this little pup to the vet for her shots and have a full health check done at the same time. Best of luck with her.

Thanks for all the great replies. Personally I feel I didnt do anything special, there are so many more dogs that need a chance at life and would be great companions.

As far as the vaccines; I actually gave her a shot today because we had an extra set in the fridge. It went smooth so now I feel better that she is vaccinated for corona virus and distemper. You think this is ok? Ill still bring her to the vet for the checkup on tues..

Parvo vaccines are very important too. I'm sure the vet will mention that! good luck with the little one!

Thank you for rescuing this sweet little pup! Please get her to the vet ASAP so that a thorough exam can be done. The question posed is whether or not you have experience with shots? This is extremely important if you plan on innoculating the pup yourself.

Good luck and have lots of fun puppy memories!

Hey thanks for the replies.

I actually have some experience with shots. I made sure I didnt hit the muscle and it went just under the skin I lifted near the neck.

Thank you for rescuing the pups. I love my Daisy's waggy tail. We did learn rather quickly not to leave drinks on the coffee table as she grew taller and taller. One big happy wag and z-o-o-m **s-p-l-a-s-h** went the drinks. Good luck with your new pup. I know she will bring you much happiness.

Re: Saved a PUP need some Info

Best wishes to your new addition!

Athena had a hernia and I had no idea till the Vet pointed it out when she got her puppy shots #3 done. My vet said it was ok to wait until she was ready to be spayed, so we were able to do it all in one. See what your vet says about it. Athena's was very small and not at all noticable to me.

* as for "Is it ok to buy the first shot and give it to her myself? "

yes, if you can do & know how. No reason why not. I'm really surprised the pound did not do it. /shrug Our local human societies (Forsyth /Fulton /Cobb counties, used all 3 over last 20 years) is so good here. I loved them all to death ( in a nice way, lol). The dogs are all vacinated prior to being released. I'm amazed the pound doesn't follow that protocol. Guess it's true about diff. between gov't and private groups. Gov't will always mess things up.

I give my dogs all their shots My vet just requires I keep the sticker tabs from the bottles so they know what she received. I do take them in for Rabies,Heartworm testing, and preventive and worming
