Unhappy Bloody Nose - Vet???

I just found out that Vienna has a bloody nose. I got up from a nap earlier and found some blood on the carpet, while cleaning it up, there was quite a bit.

I just about 30 mins ago, found it's coming from Vienna. I have applied an ice pack just a few mins ago and tried to apply pressure. It's till bleeding.

I give her buffered aspirin 2x a day for pain and I know that this will make it harder to stop her bleeding.

Is there anything I can do?

Do I need to head to the Emergency Vet?

A couple of things: There is NO types of poison around my place, so she couldn't have gotten anything like that in her system.

It is definitely coming from her nose. When she sneezes you can see it and sitting there holding her I can see it coming out.

I'm getting in the shower now so I'll check back for responses.

Thanks!

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Here is a post that might be helpful to you, Kate.

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/vet...ht=bloody+nose

I don't have any experience with bloody noses...but if you can get the bleeding stopped, it seems like the consensus in the thread posted above is to make a vet appt. ASAP...like tomorrow. If you can't get the bleeding stopped, I would make call the vet today. It would worry me if the bleeding wouldn't stop.

Hope everything is okay on your end!

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

The first indication we saw of our Riga's nasal carcinoma was a very slight, chronic bloody discharge from one of her nostrils.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I'm going to try the ice pack for 20 mins, didn't use it that long the first time.

Any more ideas would be great - the ER vets are at the best 1 hr away if not 2.

thanks,
Kathy

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I had it on there for "almost" 20 mins. It's still bleeding. I have her crated now to make sure she doesn't get hyper. I've got the timer set for 40 mins so I can do this again.

I know the aspirin has made her blood thinner (am I right?).

If the next one doesn't make it quit should I get in the car w/her?

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

How badly is it bleeding? This link http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...oody_nose.html says to be aware that a dog will swallow much more blood than they will be discharging from their nose.

If you have a bag of frozen peas or corn, that will mold to the bridge of her nose better than a stiff ice pack. I'd be very concerned if the ice pack is not helping, and head for the emergency clinic. And yes, aspirin is a blood thinner.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I have 2 of the soft freezer packs. I've been applying them more and I thought I had it stopped, then she sneezed and it started again.

Looks like we are on our way to the ER.

Checking in to see how Vienna is doing. You had mentioned the vet was an hour or so away so please post us when you get back.

fingers crossed it turns out okay.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I didn't take her last night, I was able to slow down the bleeding and it stopped until she sneezed again, so I kept her crated and calm. I took her to my vet this morning and after doing her platelets, they've diagnosed her with ITP.

They are doing a treatment today (an IV one), and then we'll go from there. He said he has seen an increase in this the past month. One dog they are treating just came back for a follow-up and is doing great.

So I'm searching on the web for how else to deal with this and what it will entail. They wanted to keep her over night if I can't keep her calm here, but she's very easily crated so unless she isn't responding to the first treatment I'll bring her home.

I'll let everyone know how she's doing.

Thanks,
Kathy

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for that site, I found it and a couple of others. I'm supposed to call the vet at 2 and see if she is responding to the treatment they are giving her.

My grandfather died Friday night, then Saturday morning find out that my foster Seven has heartworms, now this.

I have to deal with the 2 rescues that are involved in Seven to see what/how we are going to do this.

THanks,
Kathy

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Do you have foxtails in your area? I forgot to look and see where you were from. When dogs get them up the nose the only way to stop the bleeding is when the foxtail comes out. Sometimes they sneeze them out but often they have to be removed.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I had a female rottweiler that also had that disease. Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. No or low platelets in her blood. A low count is 170 and my girl was down to 14. The vet gave Mia a shot of Dexamethazone and she was on Prednisone 50 mg, 1 1/2 tablets 2X a day for 2 weeks, then for 2 more weeks she took 1 pill a day, then down to 1 pill every 2nd day. One of the side effects of the medication is hunger & thirst and the other of course is needing to urinate a lot more.

Sending best wishes for a full recovery for your girl.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Macho Rottie, how is your girl now? Do you have to watch out for anything in particular?

Vienna is taking 3 pills 2x a day of prednisone 20mg, 1 pill 1x a day of Iamotidine 20 mg (I'm not sure if the first couple of letters are right, I wrote over it when I was making the note to myself about when to give...), and 5 pills 1x a day of Doxycycline (for any underlying infection).

Her bleeding stopped last night about 8ish. I kept her crated today and will again tomorrow. She goes back to the vet tomorrow night for a follow up, but he called tonight and is glad to hear that she's doing okay so far.

They are re-running the Rocky Mountain Fever test, so we aren't sure if that is positive or not.

Thanks for the good wishes,
Kathy
