Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

I don't mean to scare or worry you. Try and remember that each dog is different and what affects one does not affect the other.

I am sorry to say that Mia died in April of last year. She did live for a few years after that episode but she developed many other problems. She was Immune compromised and ended up having pnuemonia twice. She got Inflammitory Bowel Disease. All her nails peeled off and all that grew back were distorted stumps that sometimes bled and caused her pain when she stubbed them. The muscles on her neck wasted away. When she moved her neck her perifieral(sp) nerves come out of the spinal column and caused her great pain. I gave her Rymadyl and that helped with her pain and let her live a normal life for a short while. The vet figured this all went back to her immune issues as he did do many blood tests and x-rays, nothing came back abnormal. I had her PTS because the last time she had pneumonia she just didn't get better. She couldn't breathe and was gasping for air. She woke me at 5am and I saw in her eyes that she needed to leave.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Thanks Tilly - At least I know where my Grandfather is!

Reno, they did the bloodwork and it's definitely the IPT problem. Vienna is not the most active dog in the neighborhood....

Macho, I know I'm going to have to keep my eyes on her from now on, but I'll be thankful for however long we have together.

thanks all,
Kathy

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

My thoughts are with you Kathy.

I lost my old boy Kamen last July to immune mediated hemolytic anemia. The first sign was nosebleeds. In our case sadly, he was gone within a week. He was just a couple months shy of 11.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Troy,

I lost one of my girls to IMHA about 5 years ago, she was between 1 1/2 and 2. I adopted her from a Humane Society and only had her for 6 months, but she and I were so close. Her's started with lethargy and anemia - like you she lasted about a week, and that was even with quite a few transfusions (some of the blood even came from members of this board).

When the vet said "Immune", I about lost it right then. The retested her blood last night and the platelets "appear" to be doing better. They said the white cells are a little elevated but that could be expected with her on prednisone.

Last night and this morning though, she wouldn't eat and seems to be more lethargic. I'm going to go to the grocery store and see what I can find to stimulate her appetite. She goes back again Saturday morning for more blood work.

Is there something more I should be looking for?

Should I put her on some type of vitamin?

thanks,
Kathy

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

It appears that this was triggered by a tick bite with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (?). At least the blood test showed a positive, although a low positive.

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia? Is that her dx? Yes, that can be caused by RMSF. Did they also titre for Ehrlichea (both canis and equi) ?

Re: Bloody Nose - Vet???

Gretchen, that's what they are saying it is. The erlichea came back negative, I'm not sure about canis and equi?. The only thing that showed remotely was the Rocky Mountain.

The doctor has doubled her antibiotic now, 10 of the doxy a day.

Tonight she ate (chicken and rice w/a little pumpkin mixed in), she might have ate anything I gave her as she was acting hungry.

So anyway, she ate and has her pills down, here's another night down.

BTW I bought some of the little shrimp, I saw it referenced in a couple of other threads about being good for them. Is that right?

thanks all,
Kathy
