Lameness in leg in two weeks....

Well...our lurcher has taken a turn for the worse. (I posted earlier asking for input re: metacam that was prescribed for her.) I took her back into the vet as she was getting worse. She started dragging her right rear leg. They did some more tests. At that time she only had deep tissue pain in the leg. Pins inserted into the leg resulted in no reaction. Reflexes below the knee are nonexistant. The vet was concerned at the rapid progression of lameness and got us into an Emergency Center an hour and a half away.

The surgeon suspects either a tumor on the spine or some type of disc disease. I have to take her back tomorrow for an MRI. If it is a tumor, it's location and type will determine if it is operable. If it is disc disease and they can isolate it, they will amputate the leg as it is now pretty useless.

I feel so bad for her. This came on so suddenly. The vet said she isn't in any pain...but you can tell she is clearly distressed by having a bum leg getting in the way and inhibiting her from playing, running, jumping etc...Other than that, her appetite is good and she is alert.

Any one go through anything similar? What can we expect?

I haven't any experience with this but I wanted to write and tell you that you both will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am so glad she has someone like you to give her the best care possible...

I'm so sorry to hear this, please keep us posted as to what the vets find out. Thank goodness she is not in pain. If required and if they do an amputation, there are many dogs that live without a limb and adjust quickly with no problems.

Re: Lameness in leg in two weeks....

One of my girls had a similar sounding problem last summer (she was 5yo).
We took her to a doggie neurologist who did every neuro test under the sun
including MRI and came to the conclusion that she had had a stroke. She did
eventually regain use of her leg but it took quite a while.
Good luck
