I`m planning to get my 8 months old boy neutered next week..What are the most common side-effects for having your male rottie neutered ? how long it will healed and what did you usually do to prevent him from licking the wound ? and is it true that if you neutered him before 1 yr old, he would get much bigger ? thanks for the info..

Our males were neutered at 10 months and 2 years of age (that's when they both came to rescue).

The 10 month old was neutered the day before we brought him home - almost 6 1/2 years ago! We were told to keep him from running around like a nut for a few days and watch for signs of infection. We leash walked him and kept him crated with chew bones to occupy him.

We didn't see any side effects except a little grogginess from the anesthesia as he was neutered late in the day. No food until the evening . He was crated when we could not watch him as he was not 100% housebroken at the time.

I don't recall him bothering the surgical site.

I do not think that he would have gotten much bigger had he not been neutered until after 12-18 months old. he is 85 pounds now - the smaller end of the standard, but well proportioned.
