Re: one year old has diarrhea and throwing up? I actually just went to the vet for this today. My 2 1/2 year old male Rottie has been having diarrhea and threw up yesterday and today. This morning there was blood in his vomit so off we went to the vet. Good information: the vet said that the lining of a dog's stomach is very sensitive, so throwing up alone can cause the blood in the vomit; good to know. Anyway, his temperature was normal with no abdominal pain (two big signs that something is wrong). So, he was given a shot to help settle his stomach and also medicine to inhibit vomiting and also settle his stomach. The vet said to put him on rice and cottage cheese and then gradually reintroduce his food. Dogs can pick up viruses from other dogs and places where dogs are prone to be. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues, you might want to see the vet, but I would try giving him rice like you did before for a day and then gradually reintroduce food to see if it gets better, if not, the vet needs to see him. Hopefully that helps some!

Re: one year old has diarrhea and throwing up? Theres this park we take him to...where other dogs often go too.. and his head is always in the grass sniffing..can he pick up bacteria/viruses through sniffing other dogs urine/poo? Or does he have to come in contact with the actual dog?

Re: one year old has diarrhea and throwing up? Yes. Parvovirus is in the soil. The vet said that it can take only 20 minutes to become infected. With parvo, it will make a well vaccinated adult dog have vomiting and diarrhea but it is way more harmful for a puppy.

Re: one year old has diarrhea and throwing up? If this is a dog park...I recommend avoiding taking your rottie to one...for other reasons than health...I hope your rottie is doing better. I have a 2 1/2 year old rottie with IBD. She was able to tolerate a regular dog from a pup to about a year of age and then started getting sick. She would constantly vomit and have then eventually started having diarrhea. She also salivates and has hyperactive bowel sounds (sounds like her stomach is crying). The symptoms started slowly and then as time went on progressively got worse. So she might have vomited one day and then after a while she began to vomit multiple times a day. She lost alot of weight! We lived at the vet's office running all kinds of tests and even did exploratory surgery. IBD as well as food allergies are very hard to diagnose. There are allergy tests they can do but they are very expensive and alot of the time you don't find out very much. If your dog has IBD, there are special dog foods they make that they can eat (expensive)...and then there is the option of home-prepared diets specific for IBD which there are multiple people on here who can help you with this. However, with too little info provided, it is hard to see what your dog has. It could be a simple virus as all dogs get from time to time. It could be a bowel obstruction, but if your dog is now having formed stools, then it wouldn't be an obstruction. You can have diarrhea with an obstruction but not formed stools. It is also possible your pup is torting (where is the stomach twists) and then untorts, but I doubt it..and usually diarrhea isn't accompanied with it. Worms is a possibility...how was the fecal exam results? My suggestion, if your pup does well on the rice diet for a few days...and you slowly restart the original food, and then your pup starts to get sick again..it might be a food sensitivity or IBD. Then you will have to make a decision of food change. There is the EN diet (which is a vet prescription diet) and a food by Wellness that is pretty good for IBD. I do a home-prepared diet with supplements which my dog tolerates. Please keep us updated. When you speak to the vet again, you can ask if they think it is a food sensivity, IBD, obstruction and/or so forth. Good Luck! And hope your dog feels better.
