How do we treat mange?

My pooch has got mange (loosing hair in forehead), I even saw the uggly little critters under the microscope. The vet gave her an injecton and me a solution (AMITIX) to dip/sponge her in once a week. I'm a bit sceptic though. Is there really no ointment or cream to rather apply to the pach so that the mites die and hair comes back? My rottweiler hates bathing and I think she's getting wet too often for her own good. Wouldn't FrontlinePlus do the same job?

Frontline, i believe is for flea's, not to treat mange. do a search for mange and lots should come up, i hope your dog recovers

Re: How do we treat mange?

Is it Sarcoptic or Demodex mange?

Frontline will not treat mange. The one spot where the hair is gone is probably one aera where the mange is the most prevalent. The mites are everywhere, so the dip/bath is the best treatment.

Of the two types of mange mites - one of them is always present and something usually triggers the outbreak - stress, injury, etc...

Re: How do we treat mange?

Sounds like the standard treatment for mange. You need to do the dips as the vet prescribed them. It's likely the same thing as Mitaban, which does a good job, and which will take care of mites everywhere the dog has them (assuming you do the dips properly). If you don't trust your vet, find a different one, but I don't see any reason to be skeptical about this, this is the normal way mange is treated (Frontine won't do it). Remember to wear gloves and don't get the dip on yourself.

Re: How do we treat mange?

I think it idepends on what mange it is, sarcoptic or demodetic. Demodetic is part of their natural flora and shows up when the animal is under stress or has a lower immune system. It can be treated with a cream, but it still takes months to clear up. Sarcoptic is much more difficult to treat, is contagious and you need to do the dips.

Re: How do we treat mange?

How old is your dog and is it sarcoptic or demodectic mange? Ivermectin works for both, is that the injection your dog was given?

If it's locaized demodectic mange (meaning only on a small area of the body), there's a topical ointment called Goodwinol that can be applied instead of a dip.

Re: How do we treat mange?

Donna - knowing what type of mange, like everyone has asked, is important - how old is your dog as well? Treating young puppies should be done with caution, but if you are under the care of a vet, you should be fine with the treatment recommended. We just treated a rescued male rottweiler for sarcoptic mange, and our vet preferred the topical application of Revolution - three treatments spaced 2 weeks apart. Just before the six weeks, he had negative skin scrapes and is starting to grow back his hair. But sarcoptic mange is very contagious to your other pets, and you can even have issues with it - so follow your vets recommendations closely, or as Spidey says, if you aren't confident in your vet, find one you do trust. Good luck with the treatment.

Re: How do we treat mange?

Not sure which type of mange, the mites were long and thin, almost like rods or spools in shape, and the injection she got was IVOMEC. The vet said it wasn't contageous and not related to the environment she stays in, meaning any dog could get it, except he's seen it typically more in some breeds more than others and he said it's genetic.
When diping my dog, I guess I should fill up a deep tub with the mix and then soak the entire dog, right? I only washed her today with the solution as best I could and in the end I just poured the enire bucket over her.
She's 6 months and 23 days old.
I feel so sorry for her.

You should find out which type of mange it is...her's pretty much cleared up on it's own - she was bit younger though (maybe 4 mnths?)

Donna - if it's genetic - then likely it is demodectic which passes from mom to puppies.....although not all puppies in a litter will show symptoms. Demodectic mange can be tough to finally overcome, but thankfully, having the dog mature seems to help speed the process! The biggest concern seems to be the secondary infections that result from the itching/hair loss - keep her really clean and as cool/dry as possible between dips........and Good luck!!!

Re: How do we treat mange?

Thanks. This seems to get worse day by day now. This morning it looks like a wound more than just a bold patch and there's a little bit of blood coming out too. Could it be an aggressive type of mites? She doesn't seem to be itching. It just looks terrible ad the patch has doubled in size over one week.

Sounds like a staph infection on top of the mange. Needs antibiotics to take care of the staph. Does the bald spot smell bad, almost like rotten or spoiled meat?

Re: How do we treat mange?

Hard to tell b/c the whole dog smells chemical from the strong Amitix solution I put on. I applied some anti bacterial cream to the spot today.
