going bald

My dog is losing his hair on both sides of his body, the patchy bald spots appear in the exact same spot on both sides, and nowhere else. I have switched shampoo's but it doesn't seem to be working, could this be a symptom of a larger health problem?

Re: going bald

I would take the dog to the vet and have him checked out. There are many things that could be causing this.

Re: going bald

Could it be possible your dog is blowing it's winter coat and is rubbing the fur out on both sides by rubbing hard against the fence while walking? I've had a dog or two do this, and a little additive of "Missing Link" will help bring the coat back into great shape.

Re: going bald

I had a rottie that started loosing her hair and we took her to the vet to find that she had demodectic mange. Take your dog to the vet, if it is mange you need to get a grip on this as soon as possible.

Re: going bald

I had a bitch that did this when she was young. Ended up being a hormonal problem associated with auto-immune disease.

I suggest having your vet do a complete blood panel on him to see if there are any irregularities. Also do a test for mange.

Good luck

Yes, it could. Is he on any medications, prednisone perhaps? I would surely get him in for a vet check, a complete blood panel, and a skin scraping if needed. Bilateral hair loss is one of the symptoms for Cushing's Disease, so you might want to ask the vet about that possibility, too.
