MSM for arthritis

My 10 1/2 year old is slowing down more now. I have been giving a food supplement with a joint support for a few years. My son and his wife have 6 dogs at home. One of their dogs was having a problem and they have been giving her straight MSM which they buy at an equine supply store. The label does give dosages for dogs and they told me it has helped their dog alot. I checked an arthritis site and it seems there are questions about MSM because of its connection with DMSO. Has anybody been using this? I did do a search here for MSM, but no results.

Re: MSM for arthritis

My boy Samson has arthritis also. He will turn 10 on April 15th. One of his hip joints is very sensitive so the doc has him on Tramadol for the pain, a very mild dosage. This has helped with his walking and the tenderness that was normally associated with this leg. He was also checked for HD, ligament tears and/or bone cancer. The arthritis was actually discovered in his geriatric check-up which we do 2X/year. Most docs recommend 1X/yr but due to Samson's previous health history we feel more comfortable having him seen more often. This helps to catch symptoms earlier. He is also taking Synovi G3 chews to help replenish glucosomine. I don't know whether or not this helps but hope your baby is feeling better soon!

Re: MSM for arthritis

I know MSM as being as natural as can be.

MSM (or DMSO2), short for Methylsulfonylmethane (methylsulfonylmethane.com), is found naturally in food when food is fresh, it is driven out of all foods, even with moderate processing. The "S" in DMSO2 (dmso2.com) stands for sulfur, most people are sulfur deficient unless they eat their fish and meat raw and their vegetables uncooked. MSM is present in most green plant food stuffs and certain algae, and a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains in small amounts and is destroyed with dehydration and heat.

So what are they saying that is bad about it?

Another article.

Re: MSM for arthritis

I have mild arthritis in my hands and take Gluc Chon MSM, and give it to Scout as well for her Grade 1 LP. I have seen a tremendous improvment in her, and a good improvement for me. No issues.

Re: MSM for arthritis

Thanks MontanaRott. I know about the joint supplements with msm and would not have a problem with those. These are supposed to help repair and replace fluid to the joint. It seems though that the only benefit of msm is to reduce pain. From what I have read, it does nothing to improve the condition on its own. Glad to know it works for you guys.

Re: MSM for arthritis

When I started you Glucosamine, I used Glyco-Flex. I didn't notice improvement in my 11 yr old, BUT he did not get any worse either. Then I swithced to the Glycl-flex III. It really seemed to work with my Zeus. At first I thought I was imaging it as I wanted it to work, but then felt certain that it was helping! It was kind of pricey but he only took 1/day vs. 2/day with the first one. My vet charges $70 (120 count) for it, but I found it @ Vetmedsdirect.com for $40 (I think). It may be worth a try!

Glyco-Flex® III contains Perna canaliculus, Glucosamine HCl, Dimethylglycine, Methylsulfonylmethane, Manganese, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Grape Seed Extract, and Glutathione. It is the most complete joint formula providing factors necessary for maximum joint health, as well as added Methylsulfonylmethane for maximum comfort during recovery.

It is part of the Vetri-Science® stage of life program. STAGE 3, ADVANCED SUPPORT, for maximum support for joint dysfunction. Glyco-Flex® III helps alleviate severe discomfort and joint stiffness.

Re: MSM for arthritis

Kendra,
Do a compare/search for other places to get this supplement. Try Fosters & Smith...I too tried that same supp. from the vet (we have a new vet now) and found a much cheaper/very similiar product I've used for over a year with great results....I also have multiple other things in our regimen to battle keeping those joints healthy....Tina

Re: MSM for arthritis

Smiley, very sadly I put my Zeus to sleep last month. He was 12, and I miss him terribly. But thanks. I did find the Stage III by doing research, but I also didn't find Dr. Foster...until later. Where were you when I needed you? LOL.

Re: MSM for arthritis

Kendra,
Thanks for sharing your experience. I did order a similar product just yesterday from Foster & Smith. I hope my results are as good as you and Smileygirl had. Sorry about Zeus. I lost my Isaac last Sept. and still have a hard time accepting his loss.
