looks like dandruff???

good morning:
my lacey is 17mos. i notice that when she gets stressed there is white stuff on her fur that looks like dandruff (but not really flakes). it just comes up and disappears when i brush her off. my neighbors black lab puppy has it also, so it's not just a rottie problem.
does anyone know what this is?
thanks for any help, lacey's mom

Re: looks like dandruff???

All dogs can get dandruff especially in the dry winter months or after baths. Is it like small flakes?

Re: looks like dandruff???

Both Amber & Smidge would get dandruff when they stressed (in the vet's waiting room, etc). I think that it's common & nothing to worry about. Amber doesn't do it much & she's definitely a hand wringer so I think the tablespoon of oil that I add to her food might help.

Smidge was also a stress shedder which was always a treat . She'd leave a little black cloud on the floor of the vet's office.

Re: looks like dandruff???

I think it is common for them to get more dandery when they are stressed, its not even just a doggy problem, it used to happen with my Maine Coone mix, Foosie, too. He use to get the most horrible matted knots no matter how much you combe or brushed him...I swear I had every cat conb/brush even spray under the sun! He eventually started "de-knotting himself, but would still dander himself terribly when it came to combing time-even before the combing!

I am not sure, but maybe it is related to there sweat or sebacious glands, again, I have know idea, but just a guess!

Re: looks like dandruff???

Two of my dogs start to "flake out" with stress too. It looks like dandruff and is hard to brush away. I have noticed it just sort of disapates after awhile. Odd isn't it?

Re: looks like dandruff???

My dogs both seem to have dry-ish skin chronically, as we live in a very dry, almost desert like area. I give them both a flaxseed oil pill in the morning and one in the evening and it really helps. We ran out recently for about 2 weeks before I could get to the store, and we really noticed the dry itchy skin come back. Now that they are back on the flaxseed, they are both better.

Re: looks like dandruff???

many thanks for all replies.

just to clarify, she does not have dry skin and there is no itching or anything like that. her coat is shiny and black.

the first time this happened i did give her a cod liver oil capsule but it gave her a severe case of diarreah so now i stick with peanut butter kongs.
it is just the wierdest thing and yes Nina&Bill, lacey is definitely what you call a hand wringer.

i think this forum is the greatest, sincere thanks for all replies.

Re: looks like dandruff???

for a shiny coat, also you can use fish oil capsules. I use those, but my girl also gets the white "dandruff" during stress times, and at the vet ..maybe its from all their panting, and gettig worked up>??
