Ester bloated again

Hello all. My 9 year/almost 10, female, Ester bloated tonight for the second time in 7 months. They are doing the surgery as I type this at the Vet ER.

She has had alot of health problems this past year, mostly abdominal and I have decided not to take extraordinary action if we get to that point. I just went through something similar with Sam and I still had to put him down despite extraordinary measures.

ANyway, just asking for good thoughts and the like. Ester is an ambassador for this breed, gentle, lyal, intelligent, and so loving... A very good soul indeed.

Thanks

Re: Ester bloated again

Well she came through the surgery alright and I transported her this morning to her regular vet where she will have proper pain management (the ER vet wanted to put her on Rimadyl?!?! with her stomach cut and sewn?!? I am thinking more along the lines of morphine, thank you).

She may have some pancreatitis issues but we will see. She had a spleenectomy about 8 months ago so the vet said that that is a good thing.

It is apparently rare for a dog to bloat 2x in the same lifetime never mind w/in 6months. I don't know I am just glad she is pulling through and she is such a trooper...no crying, steady temperment, such a great girl.

SO all you thoughts and prayers are working so far and I cannot thank you enough. I guess we all know in this forum, how strong the bond is between us and our Rotties and how much we worry and are heartsick when they are in pain or worse, when we have to put them down. I am very thankful to have this forum for support...

Re: Ester bloated again

Sending Ester all the love a Rottweiler's heart can hold from Lola. You seem very level headed with the possible difficult decisions ahead. I wish I would have had some of your wisdom when we treated our last rottie girl. She had severe stomach issues, with acute vomiting. She lost 40 lbs and was seen by 4 vets. She was going on 11 yrs. I became obsessed with finding a cure when I just should have listened with my heart. It was her time to go. Instead, a stomach specialist said he could operate and cure her. She bloated and died after the surgery. It brings me great comfort to know that owners such as your self, understand when enough is enough. Again I will learn from this site and especially from you.

Re: Ester bloated again

Lola, it sounds like you have the same wisdom, as you say, as I. We all learn from mistakes and experiences. Without a doubt I know that your girl was loved by you beyond belief. You would not have tried so hard to give her life if you didn't love her.

You gave her the best care that you knew how to give. You should not regret that or dwell on the "would have, could have, should have" of the situation. I made huge mistakes with my earlier dogs and learned from all of them. But thank you for your kind words...

I thank everyone for their support with Ester. She is coming home tonight and I will be sure to post some pictures of her. She is a special, special girl and I have missed her terribly.
