What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

We have Gunner on Interceptor for heartworm prevention and need to get him more flea and tick stuff.. What Brands and or types of preventitives work best? Collar? Topical? Pill? Is there anything that controls ticks?

I am thinking about getting the Lyme shot when the weather warms some, because we have lots of ticks around here. I dont want to pulverize him with chemicals, but want a good method to prevent a likely problem that well have when it warms - fleas and Definately ticks, and mosquitoes.

We have a swamp at the end of our yard and get a lot of flies too. Is that a health risk to him? ( the eggs and stuff) Do those fly jars work? are they safe ? Or should I be concerned about the flies?

We use something called Revolutions. It is a once a month apply. Heartwarm flea and tick all in one dose. My vet recommended it. So far so good.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

That is what I am trying to figure out. We were on sentinal. But let me tell you, the chore to get him to eat it. He sucks the coating, spits the pill.
I just want to know which actually works best without the long term effects

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

I would never use revolution or any of those "does everything" pills. Talk about over-loading with poison!

As for ticks, THIS is tick country, this is where Lyme disease orginated (New England, Lyme CT to be specific). That said, many of the vets up here DO NOT recommend the lyme vaccine as it's efficacy is not truly proven, and dogs can get lyme disease FROM THE VACCINE. No thank you.

I use Preventic collars and have never had a tick on the dogs while they are wearing their collars. I take them off when the dogs swim. They are good for 3 months, I buy them online, it's cheapest.

Clinical testing has proven the collars to work better than the topicals and I know many people who have used Frontline and dogs are still loaded with ticks and subsequently Lyme.

Really? Thanks for the input. I had no idea.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

I do not treat for fleas unless I find fleas on my dogs (never have). I do not treat for intestinal worms (many HW pills do) unless my dogs have worms. I give the "heart safe" dose of HW pills (search here on the forms, you'll find lots of info), which equates to the small pills for 12lb dogs being given to my 75-110lbs dogs (the green box of Interceptor).

I really think the "does everything" pills are just WAY too many chemicals/poisons on my dog when they're not suffering anything. Doesn't make sense to me.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

I use Frontline plus and have never had an issue w/ fleas or ticks. My MIL's cats were infested w/ fleas one year and my dogs had notta one.

We often go on hikes in the woods as well and have never had a tick problem. I check my dogs over throughly after our walks.

I checked out the preventic collar, it's really reasonably priced (moreso than Frontline +). What do you use for flea control if your using this collar for ticks? (edit: nm, you must have been typing while I was typing this).

Revolution is applied to the skin not a pill.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

It's still WAY too much drug for my liking. And again, I know dogs who have gotten ticks despite it.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

I am like BR, I don't use flea or worm treatments since my animals have never had a flea or worms, if they ever do then I will treat. Also at her suggestion I now use the preventic collars.

Why use all kinds of chemicals if there is no need?

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

It's Preventic Collars all the way for us since Julius got Lyme Disease. Like Gret, we don't do anything for fleas & (knock on wood...) have never had a problem with fleas.

When Julius first turned up positive for Lyme Disease, the first question that the vet asked was, "Is he on Frontline?" Apparently they had MANY dogs come in that year who had Frontline applications & still had raging Lyme Disease or other tick related diseases.

Since we've been using Preventic, we've found NO ticks on Julius. And we're out in the woods a lot. Typically we hike 4-5 times per week deep into the forest & we haven't had a tick problem on Jules.

I don't use anythijng for fleas, unless they have them. Which has only been twice. I have used Frontline Plus when we go into the woods it works for fleas and ticks.

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

Try Asuntol ! mix it with warm water... in a spray bottle than spray your puppy's back, neck, chest..just a light spray ..and also spray the surrounding area..where he sleeps and play..it works perfectly ! there's no point if u dont spray his/her surrounding..cuz the fleas would coming back again..or use frontline for your pup and Asuntol to kill the fleas in his surrounding areas
and for worm ..use drontal! it works very well too..give them every three months...( 1 tablet for each 10 kg weight of your dog, if u got 20 kg rottie..use two tablets)

Re: What Flea & Tick Control works Best?

We were using Interceptor, is that very strong? (lots of chemicals) HE has contracted tapeworms before one time- I suspect from eating the neighbors outdoor cat feces - because it was in the dead of winter. I am not that worried about fleas he has never had them, and am going to try those preventic collars. So do you think he will most likely be okay on the preventic Collar and the Interceptor? We do bathe him sometimes with Zodiac flea, and tick doggie bath - is that too chemically- I do not want to put unnecassary chemicals on him.
