Red bumps

My dog is about 6 months now and she goes out side for about 2 hours a day. I've been noticing red bumps on her lower belly close to her private area. At first I thought she was bitten but now I'm thinking there is something wrong because I see bumps more and more. Any advice or knowledge would be helpful.

Sounds like some sort of allergy. What are you feeding? Do you treat the areas she roams in with chemicals of any kind?

Re: Red bumps

It could be a staph infection of the skin. Try cleaning her with soapy water, and an astringent (skin dryer) if you have any around. If it doesn't clear up, you'll need to get her in to the vet.

Re: Red bumps

She's probably allergic to something in your yard. Then again it could be ant bites.
Have a look around your property for anything that could cause and allergic reaction. It's probably irritating the dog too.

Re: Red bumps

My dog Brando used to get red bumps by his groin..when he was a young pup..I thought it was an allergy or ringworm. We took him to the vet and the vet said it was chafing. His rear legs were rubbing against his belly/groin.

The vet recommended putting powder on that area. It worked. Once he passed the 'funny' puppy stage we didn't have any more issues w/ it.

I'd take him to a vet tho just to make sure it's nothing serious.

Re: Red bumps

This happened to a friend's border collie and she ended up clipping his tummy hair short and using bag balm on it and it eventually cleared up. The vet told her it was an allergy.

Re: Red bumps

Start simple. Wash effected area with soap and water, rinse and dry well. See if that clears it up. Could just be a simple sweat rash (same source as chafing I guess). You can put some powder on it to keep it drier (like diaper rash). The rash is on the groin area because they clean themselves and the area can remain moist afterwards. If that does not clear it up then start to suspect bites, allergies or other causes.

I am assuming you are descibing many very tiny red dot type bumps, not fewer larger dark pink or red domed bumps. If it is domed bumps I would suspect a mast cell reaction and would consult the vet.

Re: Red bumps

At six months lots of hormonal changes, and its not uncommen to get "acne" like bumps in the groin area, chin area. As long as it doesn't get worse, "staph infection" then it will probably pass in a few months. I treated my guy's acne with benzoyl peroxide, but a low percentage because of their sensitive skin, I think it was 2% or lower?

Re: Red bumps

I just took my girl, who is 5 months and 2 weeks to the vet this past Friday, for that same problem, it sort of looked like acne, but there was one bump that was bigger and underneath the skin close to one of her nipples, it was pretty scary. I was given some medicine for it. 20 pills and by the 3rd one you could tell the bump was drying up underneath the skin, and today after her 11th one, it is completly gone, acne and bump. The vet said puppies are prone to getting acne(red bumps), but you should go get it checked out, to make sure it's nothing more serious.

Re: Red bumps

Ours got the same thing, I did a search on it and I think its called "Hot Spots." Which is usally caused by allergies.......may be the food or soap you use in his bedding or the shampoo you use.

Hope all goes well and he is feeling better.

Re: Red bumps

Hot spots are entirely different and look nothing like red bumps. Hot spots are thought to be caused by allergies, and are usually LARGE (i.e. 3" or more across) oozing sores.

Re: Red bumps

Ok.....so its not Hot Spots. But I did say that "Hot spots are caused by Allergies." I will have to keep a look out for the red bumps on our little guy, if its not uncommon for young pups. Thanks, now I know if it appears what it is and how to treat it.

Re: Red bumps

If you can find tea tree oil.....dilute it 1 part to 4 parts water, and use that to cleanse the skin. Also work on keeping the area dry.

Hot spots can be difficult to clear up, but one of the best ways to help them heal is to clipper all the fur around them.
