Mounting..

I hope this is in the right place.

My girl is seven months old and recently started her first season. I have a neutered male white shepherd and the 2 of them are best of friends.

I didnt expect this but he has now mounted her and although he cant produce seamen, is it harmful generally that she gets mounted at this age?

She is a registered purebred and I have will not be getting her spayed until I have decided she isnt worthy breeding stock. She is likely show quality and shows great promise but I dont want to let anything happen to her that may harm her chances. The breed standard states that 22 months is the earliest a first litter is to be whelped but doesnt state anything about being mounted.

Re: Mounting..

so you have a neutered wonder!
just because he is neutered he hasn't forgotten what that is!
ok.for their safety, you can walk them separately until her heat is passed.even though she can't get pregnant and no, it will not ruin her if she has been a hussy with a neutered dog, still other injuries from a "breeding"can happen.if they tie and she runs, she can injure him or herself while trying to part away from each other.if it hurts her, she can bite him and they can get into a tiff.but other than that, she's ok if he is a healthy, free of veneral disease boy.
this can last for up to 4 weeks every 6 months or so!are you ready for this?
or once you make up your mind, she can be spayed and no more worries.
if you leave her intact to show, just separate them by crates or rooms every time she is in season.

Re: Mounting..

Thanks for that advice Targontotts.

Yes I will have to put a new section of fence up so I can keep them seperate while she is acting the whore

Just wanted to make sure she wasnt ruined as far as the Kennel Union would be concerned.

Just as an aside, the injuries that can occur when they try seperate are still issues when mating proper, what do you breeders do to try prevent these?

Re: Mounting..

before breeding, need to do all her health checks(hips, elbows, heart, eyes).
be over 2 years old.prove her in the ring(conformation, working or both).
and know that breeding is alot of work and responsibility...see different threads thruout the forums.
then, i highly recommend you read up on breeding dogs and whelping litters and if possible, get a mentor in the breed.
then...to answer your question:
yes, breedings should be monitored to avoid accidents of any kind.females should be tested to bring to the stud at the right time.take into consideration, weather, fencing or enclosure,no other dogs around, etc, etc.
it is alot of work and responsibility.
sometimes you have to help hold the female, other times you need to muzzle her,or just keep the pair calm until done.
sometimes all goes well.sometimes fights can break out.

Re: Mounting..

While my lab female was in heat we had to keep our male rottie and her seperated. she is now spayed but we kept them seperated for about 1 to 2 weeks it was hard but now that she is spayed its ok.

Re: Mounting..

I would be concerned about his weight on her developing hip joints. So I would not be allowing him to mount her at this age. I do know of some neutered males that have been able to achieve a tie with an intact bitch. The ulitmate safe sex. But she is too young and if the weight of the mounting doesn't hurt her then being very young, an actual tie could injure her. If she was older, not as much of a concern.
But no, you will not "ruin" her as far as the kennel club is concerned if she gets mounted by a neutered male.

Re: Mounting..

Hmmm, didnt think of that fbkeys. Although they weigh almost the same now at 32 Kgs (70lbs?) even though he is nearly 2 (shes a very strong girl, not fat)

I have them seperated now and im not sure who is more upset! She isnt shy to offer him her goods. I have a little tart!

Thanks to all of you for the advice.
