Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

I agree with Patty. Having lost several good dog friends since 2000 I can assure you dogs think not of tomorrow. Go by how they are today not how you think they'll be in a week. Let him be a dog and do the things he loves now, not tomorrow andnot in a few days as you never know what tomorrow brings

Cancer is a nasty beast and I've experienced dogs with TCC bladder cancer-Angelica 13+, squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth- Molly almost 12, bone cancer of the skull- Tune 10 and mammary carcinoma complicated with concurrent fibrosarcoma- Xena 7+

Love is all a dog wants and then when the day comes you love them while helping them leave thisplane of existence. may you have the strength when that day comes :(

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

OK here is the diet I used and my dog NEVER lost condition on this diet.
Makes enough for 2 meals

1 lb raw meat ( i used buffalo because it has no added hormones or antibiotics but any meat can be used)
1/2 can N/D prescription diet
2 tablespoons chopped raw low carb veggies (squash, kale, spinach etc) OR 1 small jar organic low carb veggie baby food
1 organic egg 2x a week (boiled and chopped)

If you feed this diet - you do need to supplement - extra Vit C is good - so is B12

There is no greater gift than love that we can give. Thank you all for such touching words. My eyes are so sore & swollen from the emotions running through my mind. Knowing you ALL are with me helps in whatever we have to face down the road. Thanks for being there.

Maureen

other than digestibility, why do you only give the egg 2x a week? I have my own chickens & have a continual supply of eggs at hand. My dogs often get eggs in their dinners. and on the same note, why do you cook the egg?

I plan to pick up some n/d from my vet this week & am going to the store today to pick up a few other items suggested (fresh ground meat, greens, etc.) & will start Jag on what will hopefully be a helpful diet.

thank you,
Maureen

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

Colorado State University is state of the art with bone cancer. My boy was treated there by Dr. Steve Withrow with treatments most vets I talked to had never heard of! He survived the cancer because of there work. Also Dr. Ogalvi (sp) (CSU)developed a natural diet for dogs with cancer. It was a long hard road, but worth it. Some of what they have pioneered is now being used on humans with the same cancers. Good luck with your friend. I do know how you feel.I am so sorry. Sarah

It might be helpful to give us a brief description of how was he treated, and how long has his survival been to date?

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

Maureen, this is just devastating to read. I am so very sorry, but I know for whatever time Jag has left, he is in the best hands. My thoughts are with you and Jag will be in my prayers.

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

My boy had a tumor in his lower leg so they were able to do a bone replacement. Along with a stainless steel rod. Not possible in a shoulder. And then chemo. While we were deciding on treatment the CSU had a new way of treating the (killing)tumor directly without removing the bone/amputation.(Direct radiation I believe). It was new 4 years ago and the limb spare was more of a known thing so we went with a limb spare. The bone cancer never came back nor spead but he did have to have 2 cruciate ligament surguries at ISU and then he blew a disc in his neck/spine and has that repaired at ISU also. Then after all of that..He devoloped a second cancer. Untreatable. He died in his sleep 2 years after the start of the nightmare. The second cancer was unrelated to the first and who knows why he had it. Maybe the chemo put his immune system at risk when he was apparently at risk anyway. No one has an answer.

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

I cooked the egg because my dog wouldnt eat raw eggs, I really dont know if it makes a difference raw or boiled. Gave it to her 2x a week because she wasnt a huge egg lover!

Hard as this experience may be for you at this time, many are grateful you shared it with us. Some may face the same situation one day and will be more knowledgeable and prepared. Thank you! Warm thoughts for you!!

Yes, so very true. And I hope to be able to gather enough info at least during this time to help someone else down the road with what I've tried. As I look to others for help & guidance, so too will someone look to me one day.

Some how, some day, we will beat this thing.

Maureen

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

Nothing to add but my sympathy & to tell you to spoil him rotten now. I am so sorry about Jag. I lost my Smidgen to Osteosarcoma (right front shoulder). We chose not to amputate and I don't regret that. I didn't find this forum until after she was gone but I definitely would have looked into the holistic treatment & changed her diet had I known about those things.

Again, I am so sorry. I hate this disease.

Nina

Re: Jag/Osteosarcoma

Such a good looking Rotty...what a shame. OS is the bane of Rottweilers. I hope that someday, none of us will have to go through the pain and feeling of helplessness that this terrible disease causes.
I like the advice given to you already. Make him feel that you are there for him. Pamper and spoil him (not that you don't already), and send him away with the dignity that he deserves.
