How much Ester-C????

Hello everyone, I haven't posted in a while but i have been reading. My question is about Shultz, my 11 month old baby. He has bad hips, diagnosed when he was 5 mos. old. He has already had an FHO on left hip in Oct. and I'm trying to keep his right hip(which also has HD with arthritis) in as best shape as possible to avoid another surgery. Now with that being said I have him on supplements Glucosamine/Chond. with msm, fish oil, and I recently started him on Ester-c after reading that it does wonders for their joints. I started him on 500mg about 5 days ago and is doing fine no loose stools as of yet. I want to up his dose. Can anyone give me an idea as to how much would probably be maintence? I know that i have to do the bowel intolerance but i was curious, should i up him another 500mg or 250? I've heard that some people have their dogs on 2000mg daily. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

Shultz 11mos.

Re: How much Ester-C????

My vet gave me the maximum dosage for ester-c in dogs as 25 mg per pound per day. For a 100 lb dog this would work out to 2500 mg per day. My larger 110 lo rottie couldn't tolerate more than 500 mg per day, while my smaller 65 lb rottie could tolerate 1000 mg per day - any more would cause diarrhea.

Gunner doesn't take Ester C, Should he? ( I have read about it before) Do you get it at the pet store, or can you give the people kind. How do they take it , By pill? or crushed in food?

Re: How much Ester-C????

I only buy supplements at a health food store to ensure quality. Ester C is best fed in CAPSULES. The powder could be very bitter.

Re: How much Ester-C????

Thanks for the replies, I'll just keep increasing his dose til he tolerates it. I get mine at the Vitamin Shop I buy the capsules and crush them with his Gluco/chond. and fish oil then mix it with some plain yogurt, it works like a charm. My dogs love yogurt and its good for them also.

Re: How much Ester-C????

It shouldn't take long to increase it, just a few days. I usually start with one capsule in the am, one at night for 3 days (600 mg per capsule). Then after 3 or 4 days, I double it to 2 in the am, and 2 in the pm total 2400 mg. I've had no problems doin it this way.

Or start of with one in the am, one in the pm. After 3 days, give 1 in the am, 1 in the afternoon, and one in the evening. After another 3 days of this, just do 2 in the am, and 2 in the pm.

Yes, buy quality ester-c at a quality nutrition place. The stuff in the drugstores are usually crap. No point in supplementing if it doesn't get absorbed, just wasting your $ then.

I have to change the way I administer it, he gets "smart". Sometimes I open the capsules, and mix it with water and green's +. Sometimes, i squish it in bread and give it to him like a treat, but then he figures theres stuff in it, and spits it out. I sometimes squish it in cheese. Sometimes I just put the whole capsule with his food, and he gulps it all down so fast doesn't know he ate it. Dummy. lol
