Talking Elsa's Not The Same

Elsa was spayed on Thursday while she was kenneled at our vet’s office. She stayed at the vet's office for a total of 8 days. I picked her up yesterday, Wednesday. According to the vet and kennel manager Elsa did beautifully while she was there

As of this evening she has hardly touched her food, Innova Evo and she normally licks that up with in two minutes. She's sleeping just like normal, but her activity levels are down, I know that is to be expected. She seems depressed to me. Should I give it more time before I call the vet?

I was uncomfortable with spaying her in the first place, simply because I was afraid it would change her personality or something could go wrong. I could be overreacting with all of this but I need some reassurance.

Thanks for listening

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

i think you should give it a few more days, she might just need more time to recover from being kenneled and having the surgery. hope elsa is back to her old self soon.
of course, it cannot hurt to speak to the vet about any concerns you have.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

I would guess that she during her 8 day stay, she was somewhat stressed. Now that she is home, she can totally relax and catch up on her rest. Depending on when the spay took place, she could still be having a reaction the the drugs and not feel like eating. I had one dog that didn't eat anything for 4 full days then was "picky" for another 4 or 5 days before she returned to normal. If she is still not acting right by tomorrow, call the vet and see what he says.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

It's been 7days since her operation. I did get her to eat a few minutes ago. We had tuna steaks over whole wheat angel hair pasta and mixed vegetables for dinner, so I made her a plate too. She ate that! I guess she isnt feeling too bad then.

I'm just one that worries too much. And being from an Italian family, if one isn't eating well then you must be near death.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

I'm with shybird-- I would give her a little more time, and if you are still concerned, check back with the vet. If she is really tired, her appetite will not be the same, and coupled with the aftereffects of the medication, that could explain it. I still think you did the right thing by spaying her, even though she is older.

The food she ate tonight may just start her turning back toward her old self. Good luck!

First off, Rottweilers are not Italian. Ok, so now you know she can eat, watch out you don't spoil her into just eating human food. How long has she been home from the kenneling? I think maybe 2-3 days to catch up on her rest.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

I brought her home Wednesday morning. She didn’t eat at all in the evening on Wednesday. And when I called her over this morning for breakfast she wasn’t interested.

Maybe I should make her some sauerkraut and wieners!!!

I would call the Vet and say she seems especially lethargic - but I wouldn't create a feeding issue by trying everything and anything to get her to eat.

I am sure she will bounce back when the stress of being away from home wears off

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

I agree with BM, give your vet a call for your piece of mind. I would not keep offering her a bunch of different stuff to eat either.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

Was there a reason Elsa stayed at the vet's 8 days? That is really a long time for a spay?

Sorry I didn’t explain better. Normally Elsa's vet keeps the females 2nights. One day before surgery and then the night of. This particular time I was out of town for a week so they handled her boarding too. There were no complications during her stay.

Re: Elsa's Not The Same

I don’t own a rectal thermometer. I need to go buy one after I get the kids off to school. Good idea though, if she isn’t running an abnormal temperature than it probably is just stress.
