8 Month old puppy energy level

Hello,

Desmo is new to us (3 weeks) He is about 70 lbs now and 24 in tall (seems to be healthy)

My fiance and I are concerned about him because his energy level seems a bit low for a puppy. He likes to play and run with other dogs who come over and visit but after a hard days playing it shows that evening and sometimes to the next day (lazyness and lots of sleep) Is this normal?

A visit to the vet and he said we might just be lucky to have a lower energy level dog and should not be worried. He said his heart sounded fine and suggested, for peice of mind, a blood table to be done, though if something came back bad there would not be anything we could do to fix a red blood cell absorbtion problem (typicaly why a dog would show tired/lazy behavior). We decided to save our money since he looks healthy as a champ.

Other things that we are concerned about are that his eyes are a bit cloudy. They don't seem to be as sharp as a Labradors "wild eyes" and he doesnt catch treats or balls when you toss them in the air towards him sometimes he even bumps into things (I attribute to puppy clumsiness)

I guess I wanted to throw this out to experience Rotti owners to see if we are paranoid or if we should see another vet.

Thanks.

Re: 8 Month old puppy energy level

My first suggestion would be to get on the phone and talk to his breeder about your concerns.

Cool Re: 8 Month old puppy energy level

I would have a blood test done and consult his breeder.

Well I should have disclosed that he is a rescue dog. We are not even sure he is full bred.

Is there a particular reason we should be talking to the breeder if we knew them?

Thanks,

Where or whom did you get this dog from? A rescue? Do you have any background information at all?

Cloudy eyes? Not a good sign at all! They should be VERy alert, and bright eyed.

Tired after a day of playing with dogs? That sounds normal. My dog crashes pretty hard after some hardcore playing. If he's gone to the kennels more than a day, he'll laze around the entire day back.

Re: 8 Month old puppy energy level

One reason to talk to the breeder if you knew them, would be to find out the health history of their breeding line. We had purchased a female show puppy a few years back and she strated having some of the soame signs at 6 months of age, except she urinated and drank more water normal. The vet we used told us it was normal and she was fine. Then she wasn't fine, we took her to a new vet that did blood work and found that she had a kidney disorder pass on by the parents. We had to put her to sleep. I'm not saying anything is wrong with your dog. However, a little prevention goes along way. Had our first vet done blood work early on, we may have been able to save her.
