Ruptured Sebaceous Cyst

Irie has a stubborn sebaceous cyst! It ruptured once before and was treated topically. It has slowly filled back up again and Low and behold this past Sunday it ruptured again. My husband took her to our vet today, They gave her lidocaine to numb her up and they shaved the area, cut into it and cauterized it... They also perscribed some zeniquin incase of infection. Our vet said that this should do the trick, but that she has seen cases where they will still fill up after this... I guess there is another procedure that is far more surgical that can be done as a last resort. I assume that they actually remove the gland itself??? Has anyone experienced a case like this where one had ruptured more than once??

Re: Ruptured Sebaceous Cyst

Where on her body is the cyst? If it's like sebaceous cysts in humans, you oftenhave to get the whole cyst out, rather than just draining it, so that you can close the area up. Otherwise, they do tend to recur.

The cyst is on her back... The doc thought this may do the trick..I hope if it does come back that it stays small and unruptured..I just never like the idea of her going under ya know. It looks good today, nice and scabbed over.

Re: Ruptured Sebaceous Cyst

My golden had one last summer. They drained it and it took forever to heal. they told me they couldn't remove it until it was hard and they weren't sure if it would resurface or not. Well, about a week ago I noticed it's coming back. We'll have to get her to the vet this weekend. She's not in pain it's just ugly. It's draining, which i guess is good but I'm still going to take her back and have it rechecked.

Thanks Buckys mom...How are you! It appears to me that it is pretty much a doggy zit..milia is also very common in human skin as well... It is always just very scary when you feel a bump...Better safe than sorry I say. I would rather be paranoid than sorry any day.

Re: Ruptured Sebaceous Cyst

Just to pop in here, today Nando had his S.cyst removed. He has 7 stitches and did just fine, he was done in what I could swear was 20 min. (ofcorse we waited til the sedatative wore ooff and he could walk) and tonight he doesn't seem to be too hungry but other than that he's fine. He looks goofy cause of the shaved hair , so he's gettin lots of extra love tonight!

Glad to here Nando is doing well and glad to here how common this is in our breed. If it comes back again we will proceed to have it completely removed!

Re: Ruptured Sebaceous Cyst

Nando is a Gsd but don't tell him that!
...but he is doing good-so far, fingers crossed! He is starting to try to scratch at it, (from it healing) and if I can prevent that I think we'll be ok!
