Talking hacking after drinking water??

CJ seems to hack a little tonight after she drinks water, or sometimes just randomly.. not like she's choking but .. i dono, almost like a cough?? she only does it once then seems fine for hours..

she doesnt eat anything unless its food, she always spits toys out but maybe shes got a little something tickling her throat?? like i said shes not actually choking and doesnt seem distressed about it.. should I still take her into the vet? or is there anything they can do but let it go away??

yea.. i know, Im not making much sense LOL very tired

Re: hacking after drinking water??

Does she drink water really fast and are you sure she's getting enough water?

I went through that with Bear, In the morning he'd run to the water bowl and drink fast then hack (sometimes enough to hack his water up). I started giving him ice chips in a bowl at night and then working with him too slow down in his drinking. After I did that get quit his hacking and he hasn't done it since. I'm not sure if that is why he was doing it but, he quit it after that.

I'll be intersted in seeing what others say as well.

ssampson tends to do that too after drinking water. he gets the hiccups! i think it's just from drinking his water to fast. maybe thats it! i'd try rottie moms, advice. if it stops then you know it was the water. lol

Re: hacking after drinking water??

My Teddy Bear did this almost daily. It seemed to be more often when he drank from his raised feeder than when he drank from the bowl on the kitchen floor. I mentioned this to the vet and he checked him out and said all is fine. We never did figure it out.

Re: hacking after drinking water??

Yea she tends to drink water really fast when she comes in from outside, I have no idea why...there was an old bucket outside for about a week that caught snow/rain water and she would always try to drink out of it and I would chase her off from it cauz it was nasty and made ME sick thinking about someone drinking it... i turned it over and dumped it out so she wouldnt try to get to it EVERY time she went outside- the day I dumped it in front of her she came in the house and stood about 3 feet from her food & water and looked at me like she was in trouble.. now every time she comes in from outside she drinks like shes never SEEN water before..did I go about "correcting" drinking the bad water the wrong way, I never really scolded her or was harsh about it i mean SHE doesnt know its icky LOL

I have a large bowl for her for water that I change/refill about 3 times a day (she's as big on lots of fresh clean water as i am LOL) she always drinks a lot of water.. and she's done this hacking thing here and there before

is there actually a way to "teach" her to slow down when drinking water?

Re: hacking after drinking water??

How about keeping a bowl of fresh water outside as well as inside? I have both and my puppy prefers to drink out of the water dish kept outside. Perhaps if your dog had that option, she be drinking less each time she went for a drink, instead of going to town once let inside.

Re: hacking after drinking water??

Just wondering.....the amount of water she is drinking has she been tested for being a diabetic. That was the first sign of my CoCo was thrist and coughing (from drinking so fast) that I had her checked and she was a diabetic. She lived six good years after we found out.

Re: hacking after drinking water??

I did have water for her outside, it kept freezing but now that its not so cold during the days I'll have to do that again, thats a good idea.. lol never thought about THAT *sigh.. Im a little slow sometimes*

the diabetic thing.. they thought she had K9 Addisons and she was tested for that and had tons of bloodwork done, everything came back normal - is there a seperate test for that?
