Diarrhea 4 month old puppy

When I brought my puppy home on December 29 I gave her rice and ground beef mixed with dry kibble for a few days for her to adjust. She then had diarrhea into January when I tried taking her off the rice and ground beef so I took her to the vet on Januray 2. He gave her a prescription of 2 pills a day, one in the morning and one at night with dinner which stopped the diarrhea. Then after the prescription was gone the diarrhea returned. I called the vet who refilled the the prescription which ended this past Saturday. Since that time the dog's stools have gone from perfect to like a soft serve ice cream consistency and now back to diarrhea. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong? I feed my dog Iams Puppy - Large Breed 1&1/2 cups in the morning and 1&1/2 cups for dinner. She also gets a childrens multi vitamin and occasionally a scrambled egg in the morning.

Re: Diarrhea 4 month old puppy

has the pup been tested for Coccidia? Giardia? other worms/parasites? (they have to actually be looking for coccidia or giardia when doing the fecal or they often miss it

Have you tried a better quality food? Healthwise works well for pups with diar caused by food. California Natural chicken is pretty good for that also. Avoid foods like Bright life, Canidae, Innova canine and wellness because they makes sensitive tummies worse most times

Re: Diarrhea 4 month old puppy

Speaking only from my own experience just a few weeks ago, Harley had the same thing you're describing. We did the rice/ground beef and also pumpkin....once stopped, the diarrhea came back. After two days, we called the vet and he did a check for Giardia and it came back positive, finding just a few 'cysts' in the stool sample, but enough to cause the ugly diarrhea. Four days of an antibiotic and he was back to his normal self.

Jersey, I am in Jersey too. Are you S or N? If you do not have any luck with your vet, I could definitely give you 2 great vets. i would get him in there again asap and have those tests run, (the ones frontierrotts said) and definitely do not feed Iams, eukanuba, or basically anyting that can be found in petco, or your food store. Do a search on the forums about food, there is so much to learn. Good luck with your pup. Keep us posted.

She is doing ok. She has been on medication and the vet put her on Eukanuba food sold in their office called low residue - intestinal formula. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a premium food that would work well for her?

Also, her tests were negative for Coccidia -Giardia - other worms/parasites and she was put on preventative medication in case the tests didn't show the Coccidia / Giardia.
