Gave my dog Advil?!

Yesterday Oscar pulled a muscle in his neck region (we're not sure exactly where) while playing in a school field as he'd taken a good wipe out. He was fine all day and i assumed no injury but then last night he started crying/yelping when he'd try to lie down etc. We checked him all over and could only figure that he'd pulled a muscle as he didn't want to put his neck down to drink and/or lying down he'd yelp when lying his head.

I called my sister who used to work for a vet and she told me to just give him 1 advil and it would help relax his muscles and kill the pain etc. She said her vet used to tell people it was okay?! That was last night and he slept well and seemed better this morning, no crying or yelping while moving etc. So I'm assuming he's feeling better and we just need to be cautious not to let him re-pull the same muscle.

Anyways, this morning I didn't give him anymore Advil because I figured I should check the forum (I SHOULD'VE DONE IT LAST NIGHT!) and was shocked to find that it's considered toxic to dogs!!! I could've killed my sister! I called her freaking out and she was like "well aspirin, tylenol, advil...all the same stuff?"

If he's fine 12+ hours later will he be okay?? He only had the 1 tablet. Now Im really worried I"ve unintentionally poisoned him. He was back to his normal self this morning, had a good appetite and was fine when I left for work. What levels are considered toxic??

Re: Gave my dog Advil?!

I found this from Here

Quote:
Be Careful Using Ibuprofin
for Dog Pets
Although the effect of ibuprofin for dog pain relief is similar to aspirin, it has not proven as safe for use in dogs, especially over the long term.
Giving Motrin, Advil, or Nuprin to Dogs
ALWAYS watch for signs of overdose.
Individual dogs respond differently. A dog that has safely used Nuprin, Advil or Motrin in the past, may still react negatively under different conditions.
Even a small dose can kill if given too frequently.
Ibuprofin MUST NEVER be given more often than ONCE every 24 - 48 hours! Wait AT LEAST 24 hours between doses. Wait 48 hours for small dogs.

Ibuprofin must be the ONLY ingredient. Human drugs that combine ibuprofin with other active ingredients are never appropriate.

Give WITH Food to help protect the stomach from irritation.

Never give any pain killer during pregnancy or lactation, to any puppy or senior, or to ANY canine of ANY age that is taking prescription medication unless you are instructed to do so by your veterinarian.

Dogs survive pain. They often do NOT survive drug overdose.

Cats rarely survive drug overdose

The National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) gets more reports of toxic reactions in dogs to ibuprofin than to any other generic drug. Please carefully consider this information about correct dosage and known side effects before using ibuprofin for dog pain relief.

Ibuprofin (Motrin*, Advil*, Nuprin*) Overdose
Can Cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE to vital organs
or DEATH in dogs.
(The same chemical is sometimes spelled Ibuprofen, ibuprophin or ibuprophen.)

Signs of poisoning from overdose may include:

Abdominal Pain * Depression * Lack of Coordination

Efforts to induce vomiting will only help if started within 1 hour of ingestion of the overdose.

Any animal suffering an overdose needs veterinary help as soon as possible.

*Motrin, Advil and Nuprin are Registered Trademarks for specific products manufactured and marketed for human use only. If you choose to give any of these medications to your pet your do so entirely at your own risk. Neither the manufacturers nor the suppliers nor this website will be liable for any harm done. The information provided on this site is for educational purposes only to warn you of the dangers.

I use Arnica 30 from the heath food store for pain relief now. It is homeopathic and it works.

Our clients 90lb Rott mx suffered permanant liver and kidney damage after being given Advil

Re: Gave my dog Advil?!

Now I'm freaking out! He's been home alone all day and I'm losing my mind now after reading your friends dog died from it. I gave him the 1 pill at like 6pm last night and at 7:30 this morning he was totally fine?! If he was poisoned wouldn't he have been sick overnight?

Re: Gave my dog Advil?!

If I were you, I would not be writing and asking this forum, I would be calling my vet. Let him know exactly what you gave your dog, the times you gave it, his weight and how he has been acting since you started him on it.

Check his gums to make sure they have good color and run a temp just to be sure.

Re: Gave my dog Advil?!

Yes he's just fine. I came home from work that day early to see how he was with the intentions of going straight to the vet if he was showing any signs of illness. He's absolutely fine, back to his old self, no more whining over the pulled muscle, no signs of any kind that the advil harmed him....no problems. Phewwwwww! Got off easy there. Next time I won't be putting ANYTHING into his mouth without talking to his vet first.

Thanks for the advice!
