Parvo Injection!!!!

My Rotty had his Parvo Injection @ 6 weeks old, he is now 8 weeks old, when my partner went to buy him (last Thursday), the breeder told him not to take him out on the lead for at least 2 weeks. Is this right?

When i took my other dog to have her parvo when she was a puppy the vet told me not to take her on the lead for at least a week....

Re: Parvo Injection!!!!

When you say "lead" I'm assuming you mean for a walk. It is believed that for at least 10 days after a vaccination that the dog's immune system is lowered and they are more susceptible to the very virus you have just vaccinated against.

I'm not one that would take my puppy on a lead any place at that age. Avoid all parks, doggie stores ie PetSmart, Petco and always hold your puppy on your lap in the vets. I don't even bring my puppy in the waiting room I check in and when I'm called I go get my puppy.

Re: Parvo Injection!!!!

Puppies need a series of vaccinations before being considered fully vaccinated from viruses.

Puppies need socialization, but there are ways to socialize them before they are full vaccinated. Set up play dates with friends that have healthy, fully vaccinated, friendly dogs.

Luna went everywhere with us when she was a little pup. We avoided taking her out into the general public until she was about 10 weeks and had a second set of vaccines, but after that she went directly out into the public.
Use your judgement and keep him away from places that you can't control contact with other unknown dogs.

Re: Parvo Injection!!!!

Parvo is a very determined virus and hangs around places for a long time. Black and tan dogs have a higher risk of getting the virus. We actually had 3 sets of injections the last one being at 12 weeks. There seems to be different standards all over the world in regards to this. We were extremley careful where we took the boy while he was in this period. Socialization was kept to healthy vacinated dogs we knew to be virus free. If you were to take pup out on a leash take him to a place where no dogs have been like a isolated sports feild or the likes. Remember though that parvo can be transmitted by bird poo too. So inspect the area you will be in.
