Grade 2 LP

Miss Scout has a grade 2 LP in one leg and a grade 1 for the other. Now, this is my understanding of the G2LP. It will not need surgery to correct it, and when she carries that leg, she is not in pain, per se, it is that the patella has locked up, and she carries it until it releases.
We are giving her Gluc and Chond. and she gets plenty of exercise. But we have noticed with the colder weather, she carries the leg more. She will be going to the vet in the very near future for a check up, but in the mean time, I am wondering, what else can we, or should we, be doing for that knee?
She is a VERY active dog and her LP does not slow her down one bit.

Also, fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. And oh-so-stinky good.

Would she be able to take the same caps that Guerin does? We buy the 1000mg Cold Water Salmon oil caps.

Re: Grade 2 LP

I give Gluc and Chond, Ester-C, and fish oil as well. I also use doggy clothing that covers the legs to keep warm so as to not get so stiff. Works for us! And yes the cold does make it worse.

What type of clothing have you been able to find, that covers the knee? So far I have not seen anything that would work. How much Ester-C do you give your BT's? Scout weighs 15#. Thanks!

Re: Grade 2 LP

Sonny suffers from this problem too!

Things we were advised not to do by our vet:

1. No quick stops and starts (particularly from ball chasing).

2. No forced running.

3. No running around in circles (like around trees and bushes which my dog LOVES to do). This really causes the knee to lock out.

4. No fast pivoting.

I know this will be very hard for you to do with having more than one dog who all like to play.

It is also my understanding that this condition does not get better over time but can be managed and in stages I and II do not require surgery like stage III and IV will. Without curbing their behavior they can progress to a worse stage.

Hiking, swimming, hill climbing and trotting in straight lines have all been good alternatives.
