sudden head shaking??

Hi all,
Chase is like 5 weeks post opp now (tplo) and is doing good but tonight I woke up to her violently shaking her head in her x-pen?At first I thought it was nonthing but it has been about 2hour now and she is still doing it about every 15 to 20 seconds apart. She has not been out of the pen at all unless on potty breakes or leashed to me. I looked in her ear and it looks a little red around the opening, any ideas??
thanxx

Re: sudden head shaking??

have it looked at if still shaking it's head.can cause hematomas in the ears if continues to violently shake head.
it could be a little infection or irritation that is really itchy today.

Re: sudden head shaking??

She could have a hair in her ear also. Bea does this all the time and I have an otiscope and can see the hair that falls in

Try pouring a little ear cleaner (or a 50/50 mix of alcohol and pyoxide) into the ear, massage it well , let her shake it and then wipe it out. That often does the trick

Thank you, I have a little light and I do see some hair/fuzz down in her ear, so do you try to pull it out or just pour in the ear cleaner and let her shake it out?

Re: sudden head shaking??

It is normal for some hair to grow in the ear, But in some dogs shed hair seems to migrate down the ear canal. In really bad cases the dog has to be sedated then the hair removed by a vet. But often just irrigating the ear will float them out

If antibiotics were given, yeast infection in the ear could be a possibility, you usually have a odor with that.
