Overbite??

I will be picking up my puppy this next Saturday. While visiting with my breeder this weekend she showed me the puppy that she thought would be best for us. We love the puppy and definitly trust our breeder. She said it was one of her top picks but he has a little overbite and for showing it wouldn't fly.

I don't plan on showing and don't plan on having an in tact dog. This is the basis of her picking this puppy for me. From what I have been told there isn't any long term effect health or looks wise by having this. Is this true?

Re: Overbite??

Very true. Did she also pick the pup with the right temperment for you, or did she pick the pup based on looks only?. I know many healthy dogs with a slight overbite. Also from what I read, it may or may not correct itself.

Re: Overbite??

I'm not nessasarily concerned with it correcting itself. I'm more concerned that it will effect the dogs ability to eat, chew in the future. I also don't want it to look like a pug or anything.

As for the temperment she will be testing those tommorow I think. She says after being with them she thinks thats the one, but will temperment test them to make sure.

Re: Overbite??

awesome for you, breeder sounds great. Dog will not have problem in the future with eating or anything. I believe this is only a cosmetic thing. Someone correct me if I am wrong

Nope, you are correct. A slight overbite will not affect the dog in any way and could possibly correct.

It's great that the breeder is doing the temperament testing, that should help her to pick you the very best puppy for your home environment.

We'll be expecting new pics when she arrives!

Re: Overbite??

my apollo has a serious overbite. now that he has his new set of chompers and is now 8 months old his overbite is not as worse as it was when he was 8 weeks old.
he eats, chews and everything else and it does not bother him. he still has a goofy, over friendly atitude and is very affectionate. here's a pic of him

i do have to have him neutered because of the overbite.

Re: Overbite??

Haley has an overbite and it makes her look that much cuter. Especially when she's on her back and you can see her top teeth with her mouth close. Most people who notice it think it makes her look friendlier too.

Re: Overbite??

A puppies top jaw grows quicker than their bottom jaw, so when dealing with a puppy with a slight over-bite, there is a very good chance for this to correct if not eventually ending up with a complete scissors bite (assuming that it's not too severe). This can take up to 10 months to happen. That being said anything much past this time frame, I would consider permanent.

Good luck with your new puupy!

Re: Overbite??

My 4 1/2 year old, Max, was normal as a puppy but as he grew we noticed his nose pointing to the left. His palate is curved and we had to have his back molar pulled. His vet said the only time he's seen this is in pigs - Atrophic Rhinitis. This has left him with an underbite and he looks like he has an Elvis smirk which is pretty amusing.
The main thing is to watch the teeth for extra tartar where they are not aligning.
Have fun with your puppy!
