snotty and bloody nose

The first of September my Nikki started having a green snotty nose. Took her to the vet they put her on cephalexin 500mg twice a day. It got worse. Took her back 2 weeks up. She was very excited about going and had her first nose bleed. They put her on primor 1200mg. This did seem to help the green snot but never cleared it up. 2 weeks later vet ran a scope up her nose did an x-ray of her head and found nothing. No tumors no adscess teeth and nothing showed on the x-ray. So he now has her on chiprofloxacin 500mg she has now been on it for 3 weeks and i am seeing more nose bleeds and the meds seem to help the green snot. I am at a lost what to do next it has been 2 months and the vet is not sure either. He is now talking about a fungus infection? She is 81/2 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Lora

Re: snotty and bloody nose

Lora,

Are you sure she doesn't have cancer. That would be my first concern especially because of her age.

Re: snotty and bloody nose

did they do a nasal swab and send it out for culture and sensitivity? I had a male with similar symptoms and he ended up having pseudomonas. Antibiotics helped but we spent a year doing each one the lab said should work and did not.

I ended up getting Nutribiotic plus capsules through http://www.illnessisoptional.com and gave him 1 cap 3x a day til I went through 3 bottles and it finally wentaway. I gave him 1 capsule twice a day for 1 more bottle's worth just to be safe. He lived several more years and it never came back

Thumbs up Re: snotty and bloody nose

I have a retired Military Working Dog, Amor. Amor was retired due to a Brown Recluse spider bite that was treated as a Bot Fly infection for months. Finally, they figured out what it really was.....he ended up loosing his right eye and has had other side effects ever since. The bite happened around September of 04.

Around March of 05 while he was at Lackland AFB for treatment of the recluse bite, he too started having severe bloody discharge from his nose along with mucus. He has had two scopes with negative findings. He has had two head x-rays with negative findings. He has been on many meds, including antibiotics for periods of time. Nothing has worked. To this day, he still has bloody discharge/mucus. When he smacks his nose while playing or the scabs come out of the nose, he gets severe nose bleeds. Our next step is to take him to Columbia Univ. Vet dept. here in Missouri. We, along with Vet's are clueless as to this as well. I have my suspects as a fungi as well.

I know I have nothing to offer in this post, except that I understand what you are going through and I hope you can figure it out and help your dog. This forum allows us to share our stories and concerns with each other. Maybe during the course of our stories, we will be able to help each other out with ideas or avenues to travel to help our animals. I wish you luck.

Michelle

Re: snotty and bloody nose

I not saying it's impossible but just last night I was watching Venom ER, it's especially interesting to me living in AZ where almost everything has venom, my house is infested with scorpions inside and out and all around my house I have blackwidows. Anyway, the brown spider is said to be found only in TX and that many people report being bit by a brown but rarely it is actually that spider.

Re: snotty and bloody nose

Nope....the brown recluse is ramped in Missouri. In fact, our base paper just did a two page spread about it. It's facts and myths. The kennels here have had two dogs bitten by the brown recluse....Rex recovered. Amor didn't and is now retired.

Re: snotty and bloody nose

It has been a very hard 24 hr for my Nkki. She stepped off the back porch last night and tore the ligament out in her knee she can hardle walk now. Then this morning we had the worst nose bleed. She was choking and there was nothing I could do. Thank the Lord she got it going herself. I have blood all over. Took her in first thing and he says she has nasal aspergillosis a fugus infection in the sinus. Been reading up on it and it does not look good. Calling athother vet that can get a biopsy of the tissue to make sure.
Now the leg to tend with also. My vet can not treat the fungus infection but can fix the leg says to take her to Purdue University. Thanks for everyones help!! Lora

Re: snotty and bloody nose

It was a good morning for Nikki no blood out of the nose at all. She goes in monday for another scope and to get a biopsy. She would not eat last night except for lunch meat that I gave her for her meds. It kills me to see her go through all of this. It is worse than having one of the kids getting hurt least they can tell you wha is hurting. Everyone have a great weekend Lora

Re: snotty and bloody nose

My brother's Rottweiler and one of my clients (houndX) recently passed away from sinus cancer. With the Rottie, they found it right away...but with the Hound it took several scopes and tests and various medications before they diagnosed cancer. They also thought it was an infection, and then a fungus...and finally cancer. Started with discharge and then nosebleeds and sneezing....lots of bloody mucous.
I really hope your dog has something treatable. Are they positive on the Fungus diagnosis??

Re: snotty and bloody nose

There are several methods to treat it but the Dr that is closet to me is 80 miles away and it is very expensive. The cure rate is 90%. They insert tubes in the sinus cavity and shoot the med in twice aday for 14 days. Just holding on till Monday and hope they find out what it is.

Re: snotty and bloody nose

Lora,

Depending on how this turns out I want you to do a search on transfer factor. It can get kinda of confusing and really involved. I would never use this over western medicines that are available but I do find the study interesting.
