Wink Hi new here my Rottie Frank has oral cancer

Hello Everyone,
I am new here my name is Barb and I have 2 rotties Frank (just turned 9 yesterday) and Vivian 5. Both of my babies are sick, Frank has oral caner (squamas cell carsinoma) and Vivian is epileptic. I Found Franks cancer in November of last yr. Since then he has had radiation treatment and 6 months later we had to have partial removel of his upper jaw ( 4 teeth and a small piece of his pallet) He is doing Great , but at some point this form of cancer will come back. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this form of cancer with their rott.

I give my babies the best care that I can afford, but now I am all out of options. I just wish and hope that this won't come back for sometime. My Frank has such a zest for life and is truly an amazing guy. He has had a lot of health problems in the past from bad parvo where I had to steam his nose open for 2 nights so he could breath to a case of pododermitis( pustuals between the toes and pads of feet). I love this breed so much but after this cancer thing No more dogs for me, my heart can't stand the pain.

Thanks for letting me vent and tell my story. Look forward to reading posts and getting to know you all.

Barb~

My Molly had Squamous cell carcinoma of the upper left jaw. She was diagnosed in Feb 2004 at 11+ years and we opted to do no chemo or surgery. We did add Burdock, tumeric and red raspberry to her diet. She was put down in Oct 2004 when the cancer spread to either her spine or her brain where it controls the rear and she suddenly lost use of her rear end one am. (she just could not get the legs to work in the am but had been fine the night before) BUT by gosh she ate her entire breakfast down to the last crumb!

Hello and welcome, sorry you had to come here under such trying circumstance. I don't know if I agree or not with your future dog owning prospectus. I have given it great consideration. On one hand I can certainly sympathize with your sentiment of not being able to take the pain, it does hurt so badly, on the other, look at what will be left out of life. I don't know which is worse.

Barb, you might remember me from another forum. BOTH my dogs died this year. Mia in April and Max in July. I was devasted that they both had to leave within months of each other, then I got depressed.

Now I have a new girl. She has brought the joy back into my heart and my life. When the time feels right, please think about opening your heart and getting another one to love.

Hi Barb!!!! Glad to hear from you. You truly do give everything for your companions (BTW everyone, Frank is one handsome fellow!!!!). At first I felt the same as you, about all the pain of losing my trusted Rotties. Right now, I'm not in a position to adopt a new Blk/Tan friend. However, I'm due to retire in May and am planning on foster caring a Rottie around that time. JR will be just estatic I just can't see not having a Rottie around, with all of their personality and such.

We'll be thinking good thoughts for Frank's continued great health.

I understand 100% about that feeling of not getting another dog because of the pain. Ive lost 2 out of 3 dogs to OS. Out of 5 I know personally, 4 have been lost to OS. None of these dogs were related. I have a 5 yr old backyard bred rescued female rottie now, if she developes OS, I seriously doubt I will get another rottie, not until at least, we have better treatments for OS in dogs. I foster collies now, TOTALLY different world in dogs

Sorry your dogs are sick. I also understand that "never get another dog" feeling, I've had it every time a pet dies. It was quite a few years after my last dog died before I felt able to have another, but you know...you meet the right dog, you smell puppy breath, something always seems to happen to remind me that the pain of losing them is a very small price to pay for the joy of living with them. Their lifespans are shorter than ours, knowing this ahead of time can be useful, in order to make us treasure the time we DO have all the more.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

This hits close to home. I have squamous cell carcinoma. Had surgery and all looks well for now, but am still scared.
