You should consider going to the vet to have x-rays of her hips.

There are many things which could cause this. The best way to find out the cause is to have him examined by your vet. You should do this as soon as possible, as he may be in pain.

He needs to be x-rayed to see if it is arthritis or hip dysplasia.

And he should be examined to see if he has a torn ACL.

I would start with these two things and don't let him go too long before you take him to the vet. You don't want him to be in pain.

Have you checked the paw pads, for any foreign objects, also toenails for split nails, etc...

If those areas are fine, especially with the age, I would get him to the vet ASAP. You need to find out what is going on with him.

Sylvia,
The vet is your best option for diagnosis, but make sure they do a lot of hip dysplasia x-rays. They MUST be done very precisely , or the diagnostic quality will not be worth a darn. Perhaps your vet will recommend a specialist to do the x-rays. The procedure usually requires sedation.

Thank you all for replying to me about my dag Max and his back legs. He must have known that he needed to rest, because that is what he has done over the last 48 hours, and is now fine, he is putting his weight on it again and is not limping, he must have over stretched his leg, he does like to jump about he is quite lively. Once again thanks from a very relieved Sylvia.

He really does need to see a vet. If you delay now it may well cause more serious problems down the track.

Arthritis is very common in older dogs and it is painful. Please have him checked out.
