mange

I'm trying to find anyone who knows anything about Mange. Daphne is being treated for Pyoderma but I'm starting to think It's Mange because Bear has the same red bumps and he is itching. Does anyone know any websites with pictures of mange or any information about mange at all. Is it something that's passed on, do I need to treat the house or get new carpet. I would greatly appreicate any info anyone has on mange. Thanks

Has the vet done a scraping to look for mange mites? Before treating for mange, you'd want to know if mange is the problem, and that is done by looking at a scraping under a microscope.

If you google mange, you'll come up with tons of info.

Moondog,

Thank you for answering my post. Yes the Vet has done a skin scraping. I noticed black spots and tiny red bumps on Daphne's tummy, so I took her to the Vet. He did a skin scraping for that and said We would start her on a treatment for Pyoderma. He put her on Simplicef (250 MG daily) and said if this didn't clear her up we would look for other causes. Also the night before she went Dan gave her and Bear bath. I blow dryed Daphne and then brushed her and she looked like she had dandruff really bad. She only gets a bath about every six months so I'm don't really think its dry skin or dandruff. But anyhow after I got home from the Vet I turned Bear over so I could look at his tummy and He has red bumps on is belly as well. SO I called the Vet and Bear is supposed to go to the Vet on Saturday at 10:45. So then I was talking to my Dad about what the Vet had to say about Daphne and we got to talking about his Shepherd Hunter. Dad said Hunter started out the same way about four years ago. My Dad's Vet has skin scrapped Hunter sevral times and has never came up with Mange. They have been treating him for four years for allergies. IMO I haven't seen an improvement at all in him. He has several bald, red, swollen spots on him. I'm just finding it hard to believe that all three dogs are doing the same thing without spreading something to each other. The Vet did say that some mange is hard to detect on a skin scraping and that heartguard can also make it difficult to detect it as well. However if they are spreading Mange to each other I want to get it stopped before Daphne and Bear reach the severity of what Hunter's had to deal with. I'm not real sure what else this could be.

Daphne also has a bald spot on her side now. Her and Bear are both scratching and biting themselves like crazy now. Maybe I'm just watching for it more now but they are both doing it alot. Bear is beside me as I am typing this scratching and whinning like crazy. I have been searching the web and here and haven't found much info on mange starting on the stomach but again I don't know what else this could be.

Skin scrapings don't always turn up the mites, unfortunately. And it can spread to other animals and people, too. My future in-laws' puppy had sarcoptic mites so badly (and their vet was such an idiot) that she ended up with a staph infection. :( So when Angel started itching badly and getting a bit red, we brought her in and she got a shot of ivermectin (?) and then we brought her back in for another shot two weeks later. She's fine now. :)

I couldn't find any mild pictures of it in dogs online. I can find horrible, wretched ones....

Did Angel ever get any on her belly? Daphne and Bear both started on their belly. Daphne now has some on her side and under her chin. She's on an antibiotic and her itching is slowing down. Bear will be seen tomarrow, Thank God. He had me up all night last night itching and whinning. The Vet said we are going to go ahead and treat them for mange tomarrow. So hopefully that will correct their problem.

Thanks for the link.

What about Scabies? Has that been considered?

I believe Scabies is just the name for the mites affecting humans.

Judi is right. Scabies is sarcoptic mange. Demodectic mange is typically seen in immunosuppressed animals and young pups.

I was just curious because scabies is basically bovine and equine mange.

If the dogs are around livestock?

So sorry for the delayed response.

Angel had the itching and redness on her belly. She was losing hair like you would not believe and just plain miserable. :( It didn't really spread anywhere else because we were a bit paranoid about the mites. The antihistamine the vet gave us really didn't do anything...but the combination of the shot series, salmon oil, and diet change cleared everything up. Unfortunately I couldn't tell ya exactly what did it.

How are Daphne and Bear doing now?
