Can vagisil be used on a dogs foot for relief of itching? and has anybody used Atopica?, and what have you experienced? side effects?, stopping the itch or not?, etc?

Also my male always gets hot spots and scabs on the side of his face, has anybody elses had this and if so what is it caused from and how do you cure it?

Thanx for your help.

what worked best for me with itchy yeasty feet was lotrimin powder.
i would powder my dogs feet, inbetween toes, etc, and walk him around a bit so he would forget about it, and within a few days, he was great!
we carry atopica in the clinic..it's cyclosporin.. a few clients are on it, and they seem to be happy on it...but these are dogs that have alot of hair loss on them.
hot spots can come from allergies, left over soap on dog, fleas, itchy dog, skin bacterial infection, etc.gentocin spray works great...with a dab of neosporin afterwards...or if a small spot, dab with alcohol..yes, it stings, but dries it up fast.

not entirely 100% convinced that this "cured" my boy's hotspots but here goes..when we lived in NY he was on a corn based food (before I knew any better), hotspots were a constant problem. When I moved to SC, I switched him over to a lamb and rice food and he never had a hotspot again.

When he did get the hotspots my vet would have me clean them with hydrogen peroxide and then put some hydrocortisone cream on them.

My labX has serious yeast issues (feet and ears) we switched her off anything w/ corn (some treats use this as a base) and ultimately switched her off anything w/ certain flours in it. Her yeasties have subsided greatly since I changed her to chicken soup food (haven't had an ear infection since last Oct). I did use the lotrimin powder as well as a vet med called tresaderm.

So this lotrimin powder will help stop her itching as well as help get rid of the yeast? My vet has her on Ketoconazol as well as Simpliceff and Metronidazole (one of these is for a gas issue she has)

I don't have her taking the Ketoconazol yet as I just ordered it off the Internet since he just gave me a Rx for it.

Thank you

I really want her itching to go away as I know she wants it just as bad if not more....:)

Davese - What are you feeding your girl? There may be a link between what you are feeding and the issues you are describing.

TM,

I really do not want to get into the food issues again. We have spent sooo much money with food, vets, dermotologists. We tried California Natural, Pinnical, Nutro, Candia and so on over the years to see if there was any improvement with changing the diet and there was none.

They statred out on Pedigree until they were 1.5 to 2yo now we are on Science Diet and they are 7yo and we have been on SD for the past couple years.

Anyway, I really want to stop her itching until the medication kicks in. My wife went to the store and looked for Lotrimin and said she could not find the powder but got Lotrimin Ultra Cream, it states for use with Jock itch. Can I use this or not?

Thank you

lotrimin powder is in the atlete foot medicine section.i like powder best because it dries up the itchy areas better than cream.it should be next to desenex in the pharmacy.it's a black/charcoal colored bottle.
ketoconazole is nizoral-a fungal medication.we usually use that on dogs that got yeast all over...ps.did you check thyroid on your dog too?that can cause all these skin problems too.
metronidazole we use for diarrhea/intestinal bacteria overgrowth.
simplicef is a new once a day antibiotic that is from the cephalexin family.we have tried that and it's great for skin bacterial problems.usually need a 14-21 day trial.
but, it can all be diet related too.many of the diets you mentioned have similar ingredients.
sometimes these skin things drive us nuts!
sometimes it's environmental too.

I understand you not wanting to get into food issues, It can just about drive a person nuts!!

Just curious how long you fed the other foods? It took about 2 months for me to see an improvement. If you are willing to try it once more i would check out a lamb and rice formula or Chicken Soup formula.

If you 1000% don't feel that it's food related, have you noticed if the hotspots/yeasties crop up at certain times of the year? If you see then start to develop in the spring, I would ask your vet if it's ok to use benedryl. My vet recommended one benedryl daily the second spring starts thru the summer. Also baby wipes (unscented) to wipe the dog's feet when she comes in from outside might help.

I have had some ear yeast problems in the past with my Rotties. I looked up yeast fighting in a holistic health book at the health food store. It recommended Biotin and garlic powder so I now add 2 (for Bandit at 129 pounds and always has dirty ears from wrestling with Abby; 1 for Abby who is a diva and doesn't get her ears dirty!) 1000 mcg Biotin tablets and 1 Kyolic green label capsule to their dinner (I pour the powder out of the capsules) and have not had a problem at all with my current dynamic duo!

I have recommended this to a few friends as well and has worked for all the ones who have gotten back to me.
