Does anyone have any home remedies for eye infections?

What I have always used, which is also recommended by my Veterinarian (he practices holistic med.) is using Polysporin eye/ear drops which you can buy at any pharmacy behind the counter (just ask for it)! Wicca had a slight infection at one of her vet visits a few months ago, and he told me just to use Polysporin for 3 days and see how it looks then. Cheaper too, like $8.00 a bottle!

If it is REALLY bad (lots of greeny goobers), I would go to the vet first by all means. I have seen so many eye infections over the years that I can tell which I can treat myself and which I can't.

Hope that helps!

Kristi

I've had good luck using a boric acid solution that I make myself. 1/2 tsp boric acid powder to 8 oz water, bring to boil to sterilize - let cool. This amount lasts 2-3 days - I leave it in the pan I boiled it in to avoid contamination from an unsterile container and dip pieces of rolled cotton in to use to wash the eyes out with (NEVER make a second dip - always use a fresh piece of cotton for each dip). Works great to help clear up infections and eye irritation.

thank you for the suggestions! I had tried using cold tea...my grandma swears by it but I am now trying the polysporin drops...if its not better with the next day I am going to take her in for a check with the vet.

I recently took my Rott to the vet and reported what I thought was an allergic reaction too bark slivers or eye infection. Turns out, he has abnormal eyelids that turn inward. The hair on his eyelids is causing severe irritation to his eyes. The vet called it "Entropion".
Entropion causes irritation to the front of the eye, and the symptoms include a chronic eye discharge and conjunctivitis. My Rott is scheduled for surgery to correct this problem. My vet said this is a fairly common condition in Rottweilers.

Toby's eyes would get irritated from beach sand and he'd get a little conjunctivitis once in awhile. I bought teabags of Chamomille tea and put the very warm...almost hot teabags over Toby's eyes. He loved it, and would actually lean his head into the teabag!! It made him smell wonderful as well.
Just make sure you know what you are dealing with before you try any home remedies....

Well I tried the polysporin and it cleared it right up after one day...i think her eye got irritated after she was dunking her head in the lake the weekend before. Its all cleared up now and looks just like normal.

I had been using black tea...apparently there is something called tanicin (spelling??) that is in it that is good for eyes. I will have to try chamomille next time!

I woul also recommend the camomille tea bags, they do a great work for eye infections on all the amimals in the pet store I work in. But you have to do it 3-5 times a day for at least 4 days. Try it and you will see for your self :) Also worked on my dog when he had an eye infection this summer. Love Freyja &Susti
