Cyrus's Diagnosis

We just got back from Dr. Huss, poor Cyrus is soooo groggy still he's out cold.

Anyway, it seems he has several issues going on: panosteitis, calcification of the supraspinatus tendons, mild to moderate angular limb deformity of the radius and ulna, mild elbow dysplasia with DJD.

He will outgrow the panosteitis, although Dr. Huss told me most dogs outgrow it by 2 some have it until they are 5.

The calcifications may need surgery in the future but for now it's OK.

So basically I have been doing all the right things and we just need to continue: anti-inflammatories as needed, glucosamine, moderate exercise and keep his weight down.

I am sure you all know how good it feels to finally get answers! Worth every penny...and it was a LOT of pennies!

Again, a million thanks to Gretchen for the referral

Glad you finally have answers. Didn't realize pano could go on so long.
Answers are better than questions. Pennies or not. I'm still paying Tank;s TPo pennies, but he's worth every single one of them. I'll pm you something Gretchen sent me about pano.

Very good, information is power! What is the cause of the calcification? And I am assuming the deformity is hereditary? Lucky boy to have an owner who cares enough to find out what is going on!

Denise, my Max has a calcification of the supraspinatus tendon in his Right shoulder. The doctor suggested surgery, but I wanted to wait it out before I let him succumb to a very, very long invasive surgery...He is just fine!!! I am so glad I waited and didn't get the surgery as 2 years later he still has no issues with it, and I do obedience work with jumping. His orthropedist suggested that it most likely occured when he was jumping, or out playing and ran into something hard. Thankfully his elbows were clear at 5.5 yrs old....

So, I tend to think it is the DJD and angular limb deformity which is causing Cyrus' lameness.... If you do decide to do the surgery to remove the calcification, educate yourself on it....I started looking at how long he would be under, and the amount of blood he would be recieving, and I got really nervous....not something to be taken lightly.

Shirley - I think the deformity may have been exaggerated by the fact that before he ended up at the shelter here in CT where I met him, he spent ALOT of time in a too small crate...if hereditary, I'm sure all that crate time did NOT help him one bit

The woman who owned him was on welfare and thought she could make alot of money off of breeding him as she paid alot of money for him as he was advertised as RARE .

I think she thought he was her ticket out of welfare...the Animal Control folks got several calls about the dog since she was not supposed to HAVE one..and finally it was either she lost her house or lost the dog...

Denise - give that boy a HUGE smooch from me, and butt scritch too.

It is very good to have answers...now you know what you have to do....and you are already doing it!

Thanks everyone! Yes, the Dr. didn't push the surgery at all (another thing I liked about him) but said it may be an option for the future. Having the info about Max is very helpful in that area.

It stated on the information sheet I received the calcifications of the supraspinatus is a newly diagnosed condition found when attempting to diagnose other things. They don't know what causes it but suspect that trauma or overuse may. Again, last week the doc thought Cyrus may have experienced some type of trauma as a pup.

Anne, I was thinking the same thing about him being in a too small crate as a pup.

And whaddaya mean? OF COURSE he is rare! Sheesh!
