Hot spot??

My Harley is 8 months old, on Firday I noticed that she was itching her neck a lot right where her collar lays. By Friday evening I noticed a lot of her fur was gone and the area was very red. I started washing the area and putting Lanicade (anti itch) cream on the area and she seems to be leaving it alone but it is still red. I called her vet and they told me to continue to do what I'm doing and if it doesn't clear up in a couple of days to bring her in. Don't know if this is a hot spot can anyone help me out? Thanks.

My Harley just got over them, really bad on his face. I used witch hazel liquid to clean it, which also dries it out at the same time. Remove the collar, only put it on if you have to, That will allow it to breath. Keep very dry, and clean. It will go away I promise, it just looks really bad for a bit

Thanks for the info about witch hazel liquid. I've been keeping her collar off as much as possible with the exception for going outside. There weren't any pet stores in the area I was this weekend but going to the pet store after work to get a body harness so we can still go on our walks. I feel bad for her looks like it is very tender.

Is it also moist/oozing?

The best thing to do is to keep it dry, I would not be putting creams on it. Get a pair of scissors and trim back the fur over the affected area. This will help it heal. A home remedythat workswell is full-strength listerine, applied with a cotton ball. It's a good drying agent.

No, it's not oozing. Friday evening it was a little bit but since I've been cleaning it and applying the anti itch cream it hasn't been. It is moist but probably because I've been putting the cream on it but that has helped with her not itching the area. Does the listerine only help dry it out? What about helping with the itch, any suggestions there?

As it dries up, it will stop itching.

Yes...trimming back the hair and letting the air get to it is the best thing for a hot spot. Also if the dog is constantly scratching and working the area with it's nails an E-collar may be needed.

One of the best home remedies I have found for hotspots is Gold Bond Medicated Itch Powder. It seems to dry the hotspot and stops the itching too. Sprinkle it on 3-4 times during the day, and it seems to be gone quickly.
It's sold in most drugstores and grocery stores...and not expensive.

Keep in mind that if you keep a wide flat collar on the dog all the time you create an excellent breeding ground for an infection. I believe Listerine also has some anti-bacterial properties as well as providing a drying action.

My Lex gets them and I bought a little bottle of tea tree oil at the pet supply store. It worked real well, dried it up and didn't burn her, at least she didn't jump when I put it on. I never thought of Listerine.
