Cancer

My dog Cain has cancer in his toe. It has become giant and festering over the last month and he has to have it removed, maybe even his foot. Our vet quoted us nearly $1,000 for the procedure. I have made Fundraising is not permitted on the forums. to try to raise funds for him. I wanted to know if others have had this occur, what their vets charged for amputation, and what the likleyhood is that he has cancer elsewhere.
Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
How old is he? How long has he had cancer in his toe?? If it has not spread and the vet feels he has a good chance then have his toe amputated. It it has spread to other organs already...then spoil him and enjoy the little time he has left.

If you do not have the money to help your dog...then beg, borrow or sell some of your stuff so that you do. It's the least you can do for a dog that has been your friend and companion for years.

I lost my old girl in Feb to a tumor on her face.
I hope they can catch it in time and he lives a long happy life.

My son's dog had squamous cell carcinoma of the toe, but certainly did not wait until it was that bad. We had it removed immediately upon realizing it was not an infected nail, diagnosis was from the bone being sent to path. That was two years ago and there has been no return. The procedure was about $300. If your poor dog has a lot of involvement beyond a single toe, I would not know what to tell you. Also, prognosis depends upon the type of cancer.

Cain is 7 1/2 years old. We have been taking him to the vet about his toe for a few months now. Just two weeks ago did they decide it was cancer. We have switched vets now, and are having x-rays done this week to see if there is cancer elsewhere. If there is, the vet said he won't do surgery since he'll live not much longer, otherwise we will have his toe/foot/leg amputated. Two rottie rescue groups have helped offering discounted services at their vets. We are hoping for the best.

Good luck to you and your good dog. SC of the toe is not all that unusual and is rarely that spreading if caught and surgery performed.

toe amputation

I think the cost is very reasonable to have the toe amputated. My 8 year old just had his toe amputated and the cost was higher. Biopsy confirmed squamous cell carcinoma.
It was a difficult diagnosis since the only sign at first was limping. X-rays did not show anything.
I hope it does not spread. At the moment he is still healing.

I wish Cain the very best and hope he comes out of surgery with flying colors. Do let us know when he makes it home safely after surgery...
