Talking Bloody/pussy lumps on chin and bridge of Nose

I took Koda (10mo) to the vet yesterday. He has had red, pussy bumps on his chin and they recently spread to the bridge of his nose. They look exactly like the ones I found in this old thread: http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...highlight=acne

The vet did a scraping that came up negative for mange (of course!) and did a light test for fungus, which also came-up negative. She gave me an anti-biotic pill to be given once daily, and asked me to call back in a few days if there was no visible improvement. The vet is scaring me with talks of Cutaneous Histiocytosis, and wants to put him under for a biopsy. I can't find any pictures of what this condition looks like on the web.

I've read through all the post about acne and the "crusties", and I'm hoping this is all it is. ANY insight here would be much appreciated!

The thread I linked to above rearding diesel, didn't have a follow-up post; rottiluver - what if anything did you find for diesel that cured this?

Thanks in advance.

- Erik

P.S. I can post images if that will help.

When my dog was a youngster he had crusty bumps all over the bottom of his chin. My Vet at the time explained that it was a Staph. infection caused by the bottom of the chin always being slightly damp from drinking or eating his puppy slop.....I guess some bacteria got in there. I got an antibiotic.

But I have to say, the lumps were not as large as in Rottiluver's photos...they were about one third the size and they also did not spread to the bridge of the nose....maybe they would have...?

Not sure but SOME dogs get reactions to plastic bowls - have you tried stainless steel?

One of my males gets little bumps every winter and early spring because he like to dig his face in the snow and root around a lot. After the snow disappears the disappear but they can get pretty gross looking and the hair in the pores also get stuck inside. I have taken him to the vet because they always go away but I clean his chin every day with some mild soap or peroxide depending upon how how it looks.

Just a thought. My other rotti boy had jsut what rotlvr's pic's looked like. We had left him to go on our honeymoon (he stayed in the same house with family members) came home and same as those pic's all over his chin. The vet said "has this dog been under any stress?" well yeah without us for a week!! a little cream and it was gone and never returned, not sure if it is the same thing, but in our case it was stress caused....I thought that was funny, I never knew dog's can break out from stress until then!

Pazzo,

What sort of cream did you use? Also, did your Boy have those only on his chin? Koda also has them across the bridge of his nose.

I am sorry, I do not remember the exact prescription as it was only one time and more than 7 yrs ago. Also, no, it was just on his chin. I really do wish I could help more. What have you tried and how long has your dog had this? I didn't state in my last post he (vet) definitly called it ACNE brought on by stress.

I first noticed the chin lumps a couple weeks ago when we took the family to the beach for a week's vacation. He has had a small pimple here and there before that, but they always went away on their own. This time, it's more like a mass, with some zit-like openings on the mass that bleed when he rubs his chin, and then crust-over.
I took him to the vet when they moved up to the bridge of his nose.

The vet gave me a prescription, and we are now on day 3 without any signs of clearing. I have also switched to SS food and water bowls, and have stopped adding water to his kibble. I am now also bleaching the bowls after each feeding in case this is bacterial in some way.

To make things worse, he and our 5yo Pug bitch got "into it" last night and the pug gave him a good chomp on the chin, right on the largest mass, and he was bleeding all over the place. I guess he'll learn not to bother her when she's snacking on an item as precious as a hoof.

This happended to my puppy, Royce, when he was like a year old (he is now almost two). My vet explained it as "Chin Acne" and basically told me to change my plastic bowls to stainless (which I did for a short while but it didn't seem to matter) and he was put on a stronger anitbiotic ('cause at first it didn't go away) and a topical ointment (similar in texture, color and odor to benzoyl peroxide) and they went away in a week or so. When they come back (which is rare) I put the topical ointment on. If you would like to know what the name is of the ointment, I will gladly find out tonight and add another reply.

Hope you find this information useful!

I would love to have the name of the ointment you use on Royce. I too am going through this with my 16month old Elsa.

Thanks

Hi, Kim~
It's called Pyoben Gel. It's benzoyl peroxide. It's a topical (white) ointment. I think I was instructed to put it on twice per day during and after the antibiotics were gone. It worked!

Hope this works for your girl!
