Osteo and Deramaxx

Cheyanne, my BIL's 9 yr old rott'n girl, was diagnosed with Osteo today. Front right leg, up near the shoulder (top of the leg bone shows small, "moth-eaten" spots in the bone on the x-rays).

Vet for now has recommended pain management (she is favoring right front leg, limping) and prescribed a 14 days course of Deramaxx, with a follow up visit after the Deramaxx.

Cheyanne is not my dog, so I can only offer support and advice, and I know Andy & Larisa will not let her suffer any more than she has to, if at all. He has had Cheyanne since she was 12 weeks old, so he won't let her be in any pain or suffer longer than she should, if at all.

What else can I offer them in terms of what to expect with Deramaxx (I've never used it). They want to make her comfortable, and if removing the painful limb is what they have to do they will do it, especially seeing how well Thelda got around on 3 legs.

Does anyone have 1st hand knowledge of Deramaxx?? Anything else they can give her if the Deramaxx doesn't agree with her system??

I let Larisa know I would be asking for suggestions here...so anything ya'll can send my way will be greatly appreciated. Larisa knows I will bend over backwards for the dogs, so she is looking to me (and Doug) for help understanding this whole thing...and so I turn to you all...

Thank you.

I have had two Rotties with Osteo. Bettis first had Rimadyl, then Deramaxx. Buster was given Metacam. All three worked fine for both of them, with no side effects, however, each dog is different. There have been other threads recently about the side effects of the anti-inflammatories, so that would be the best source of info so they will know what to look for as far as negative side effects. Personally, I liked Metacam because you only had to give it once a day.

Please pass along to your BIL that I'm sorry to hear about Cheyanne's illness. Thoughts and prayers to all of them.

Cheyanne will be getting the Deramaxx once a day. I had read (somewhere) that there was something else that worked better for the pain (or was it the Deramaxx)...can't find it anywhere...

Andy is VERY upset about this...had no idea it could be this. Larisa sort of half expected it, hoped it wasn't but couldn't NOT think it was cancer...

My in-laws are gonna freak...I think they'll deal with it worse than Andy & Larisa

You might be thinking of Metacam. It worked great for Buster. Blood tests are needed to check liver function every 3-4 months. Hope all goes well.

Metacam is supposed to be one of the better pain killers for osteo.

Thanks - I will pass this info to Andy & Larisa. Right now she's got a pretty significant limp - they are hoping with the painkillers she'll be more comfortable. They are going to discuss their options and next week will talk to the vet again about what they can do.

The vet gave me a printout about Osteo with lots of info & online links and such (which I gave to Andy & Larisa), which was nice...instead of just talking about it - who really listens past the word 'cancer' anyways? Larisa e-mailed me this morning with a bunch of questions...will get answers for her today (or if I can't, will ask you all)...

Sorry, I should have added these on a previous post. Here are two Sites that hopefully can give you info on Osteo and how it can be treated.
