Thumbs up Osteosarcoma

We were just told that my 10 y.o. male rott has osteosarcoma in the right rear. We have had 2 other Rotts with the same thing already so we know the drill - however have heard about new radiation treatment that has great results ?-anyone know anything about this or had any experience! Thanks

Sorry to hear another Rottie has OS. I've lost two to the dreaded illness. Both of my guys were not able to benefit from radiation due to the specific nature of their tumors. Here are two Web Sites that will hopefully give you enough info to ask the Vets good questions.

Thoughts and prayers to your fellow in this difficult time.

Osteo is one of those nasty cancers that greyhounds are prone to. This website : http://community-2.webtv.net/SAStefa...age2.html#menu is from a family who basically fought osteo in their grey. They have many useful articles and awesome reference material as far as supplements, diet, and treatment. I think there is some real knowlege to be gained from it. Just be aware, you will probably need a box of tissues.

I am very sorry to hear about the osteo in your Rott. Though 10 years for our Rotts is not a bad age.
I am curious to know...since so many of our beloved breed die of this dreadful disease...a couple of things.
Since this is your 3rd Rott with it.
At what age were they neutered/spayed?
What dog food did your feed them for the majority of their lives?
Did they get vaccinated every year??

As far as I have heard with osteo....the only thing that any treatment buys is a little time.
Enjoy and spoil your dog with what ever time you have left.

Gina

Gina,
Boris was nuetered at age 7 ,his sister was spayed at a year and a half due to hip replacemnt surgery, first rott spayed at around 2 years. The last two ate Innova and Natures Best for the last 6 years however as puppies they ate Science Diet I think (long time to remember) Yes, they were all vacinated every year up until two years ago - I guess that is very controversial subject now. We are really spoiling him now as we have his whole life! Thanks - Jenny

I guess that puts the study of Rottweilers neutered/spayed before the age of 12 month having a greater chance of osteo in question????

Boris and his sister were littermates?? I am thinking that osteo does run in some lines more then others?

I have a female rescue Rottie that is going to be turning 7 this fall...and honestly everytime she limps for a second or does not want to walk far with us...I am thinking the worst. She did have a poor beginning, but has been with us for 4 years and only eaten the best food and been titered ever year. I know I have done the best for her.

Thank-you for your information.

I know that your dog is much loved and will enjoy whatever time he has with you.

Gina
