| Mange We took our Rotti pup to the vet today. He has a few small places over his body. The Vet said he had Demodectic Mange. He said dogs get this from tiny parasites that live in the dogs hair folicles and and skin glands. We did get antibiotics. He said we also needed to bath him in some medicated shampoo. This shampoo cost about $37.36. He also said he should be dipped once every 10 days in a solution called tactin. This stuff is pretty expesive at $82.50 for 16-20ml. Has anyone else had this situation? Is ther e any generics for these items? Thank you for any help. |

| Hi Anna, How old is your puppy? Demodex outbreaks are not uncommon in puppies. All dogs have it (they get it from the dam) but it usually causes no outbreak because the immune system keeps it in check. It takes a few months for puppies to fully develop their immune systems and that is why it is seen with puppies much more frequently than adults. Localized demodex in pups will usually clear up on it's own as the immune system develops. The antibiotics are to treat secondary skin infections, not the demodex. There is an ointment that can be used topically called Goodwinol ointment. I'd prefer that for a localized mange over using dips. Those dips are toxic, and if the mange is generalized (meaning over the entire body), sometimes there's no avoiding their use, but for a few spots on a puppy I'd try the Goodwinol. |

| My minpin got demodex when she was about 2 years old only around her eye. We used the Goodwinol ointment and it took about 6 months for it to completely clear up. It can be brought on by stress too, as stress also lowers the immune system.

| If it is on the body and not isolated to the usualy eye area and muzzle, I would suspect that it needs to be treated with proper medication and not just wait for the pup to outgrow it. Ivermectin by injection is I believe the simplest method but check that out. Treating systemically rather than topically makes more sense

| WHewww, Chivas had demodex after a long bout of parvo but none of her treatments where NEAR as costly as the ones you mentioned. She was given a dip every 2 weeks ( i did it at home) and that was about $20 a bottle, she was also given ivermectrin.
