An FYI about Skin so Soft.........

Just got an email from a friend who uses Skin so Soft on her horses as a repellant........

Older containers are labeled 'Authentic' Skin so Soft and the ingredient was lanolin alcohol. Newer containers are labeled 'Original' Skin so Soft and the ingredient is carota sativa [carrot] seed oil. The bottles are different as well. I wouldn't have caught it if I had thrown out the old bottle promptly. I recently purchased and used the newer version and promptly broke out in hives - big time - all over. I'm switching to baby oil. Just imagine a horse with such a large body-wide mass having a reaction!

I e-mailed Avon & the patent response was 'newer is better'. If anyone sees any reactions let me know at Please do not post email addresses on the forums. - be sure to include in subject 'Avon' -

I know alot of people use it on their dogs as well.....not sure if anyone has had any reactions, but it is something to be aware of....

4 or 5 years ago we had a summer when the deerflies were really bad. They would go after the dog's ears and eyes and around the anus. Since I was hesitant to use a repellant with DEET because the dogs might lick it off, the vet suggested spraying them with a solution of 1/2 Skin-So-Soft and 1/2 water. It was complete ineffective against deerflies. I tried a stronger dilution of 3/4:1/4 and it still didn't work. Then I tried rubbing the undiluted Skin-So-Soft on the appropriate areas, and the dogs wound up with very greasy coats and the deerflies still came after them.
