Talking Diarrhea

My puppy is 9.5 weeks old, she was fine until I took her to get her first shot at 7 weeks
She started getting diarrhea and I thought it’s normal since it’s been 2 days…but when it went on for about a week, I took her back to the vet, and they did a detailed analysis on her and on her stool, and told me she was fine, and might have bowel inflammation, so they gave me Metronidazole 100mg, to give 2 times a day for 5 days, which I did and her stool improved, so now she’s about 8.5 weeks, ……it started again 2 days ago, the stool was soft, and today she had diarrhea again….i don’t know what the problem is, and why she is having it….her food is Innova puppy dry….she drinks lots of water, and she is very energetic so I know nothing is wrong with her except diarrhea. And she does not have an accident in the house, she will wait until she goes outside to the park or on grass, so it’s not like she can’t control it

Is it the food?, should I put her on different food, I thought Innova puppy was the best food for puppies out there, am I wrong….Please help!!

They'll move it for you.

So she's not sick? A young pup with diarhea, can dehydrate very quickly. DOes she just have loose stools (mushy), or diarhea (the latter being liquid like)?

If its occasionaly getting soft stools, it may be the food. Innova is kinda rich. She's so young, who knows if she does well on this food or not. Instead of switching, try feeding plain rice cooked (brown or white), and one meat source cooked, like chicken. Feed this for a few days, see if there is improvement. If not, she's probably ill. If so, then you'll know its the food, and you may want to try something different.

Be careful. If it is IBD or something worse, it doesn't matter with a rottie. They will hide illness and pain - they were bred for that. Keep a close eye on her and stay on top of your vet. Have you contacted the breeder? This might be something that is showing up in the littermates...

Hi Ninasmom
that's what the vet thought she might have, Inflammatory bowel disease so they gave me the Metronidazole 100mg, to give 2 times a day for 5 days, and it worked for a week then came back again....when they analyzed her stool, nothing was wrong...but they gave me the med just in case...it worked for a week and as i sade it came back again

Have the vets begin her on a restricted diet. I don't want to scare you but it sounds frighteningly familiar. IMO you need to change foods now.

Stupid question: How does it smell?

No the vet asked me what type of food do i give her, i told them Innova puppy dry...they told me it's good food, they told me to make sure she is drinking lots of water and to just give her the med for the 5 days....
they called me to check on her during the time it stoped...and she was ok
now it started again....i'm thinking it's the innova puppy...i'm gonna try EVO and see what happeneds..
P.S...it smells like poo...i don't know the smell never changed...and no blod or anything like that in it...i checked
the color is brown...no change......it's just liquid

what is IMO?? ..sorry i'm new here

IMO = in my opinion. (sometimes, there's an H in there as well = humble)

How much are you feeding her? If you are feeding what the bag says, then you are probably overfeeding. That can cause liquid poo.

Innova is a good food. So is Evo.

??? I don't know, but Evo is even denser food. I'm not sure if going to even a denser food is a good idea. Evo has the same ingredients (minus herring meal), and more. Unless your pup is not doing well with the herring meal, doubt it, then switching foods to Evo will likely be in vein. I'd be switching to a totally different food that has slightly less cal content, so its not so rich, and with a different mixture of ingredients. THere's a lot of ingredients in Innova and more in Evo.

in the section for nutrition i was reading that some people had dogs on Innova and the stool was soft, but when they switch to EVO, it was fine, and less of it....and it worked for them...so thought i try it

there is another called Holistic blend....any other you guys recommend??

Have you tried doing the elimination diet (at least phase one), to see if it actually IS the food? (Rice and 1 meat source?) I'd definatley be doing that first.

Bland is best. Chopped meat and rice, or boiled chicken and rice. The last time Nina had an episode the vet recommended white rice, chopped hard-boiled egg and chicken broth. You can't stay on it long because it has next to no nutritional value.

IMO - talk to your vet. Try cutting back on the food before you switch to a new one. If she is suffering from IBD, switching foods will only irritate her intestines more. It could be that she is just being overfed.

Also, alot of the dogs here on Evo are high-performance, adult dogs. It's a hot food for a puppy... alot of ingredients, high in calories. Yes, it is a good food, but you might want to hold back on it.

I know it's frustrating, just hang in there. Remember, quick moves will make it worse, even if you have the best intentions.
